Question Old P3 500 and SageTV

I am running the latest trial version of SageTV on an old Compaq P3 500 with 320mb ram and I think an ATA66 IDE controller with a simple AGP card.

I am using a crappy Pinnacle PCTV card.

I have not yet tried to record anything as I know without hardware encoding I will get VCD quality at best.

I thought the SageTV client would work, but I am getting audio playback in fast motion and enormous lag for the video.

If I buy a PVR-150 would this problem be solved or do I need a tv card with hardware encoding as well as decoding ?

What are the server requirements for clientv to be worth watching ? Can it be done using my P3 hardware ? I don't want to watch TV on the server itself, I only want to use it to record and to stream to the sagetv client.

BTW I run the client on a P4 2.8 with 2.5gb ram and an ati 9600 over 100mbit, so this souldn't be a problem.

I don't know if the client playback problem is due to the software encoder, slower server cpu used for software encoding, or settings on the client, but with a hardware encoder, the server doesn't need to be very powerful. I used to have a couple tuners on a p2-400 & it worked as a server perfectly fine.

A server doesn't take much power if you have hardware capture cards. I have a Celeron 366 with 320mb of ram and have no problems capturing 4 shows at once and streaming to my client.
