Unable to play 'Imported Videos" in Client

I must be doing something wonky. Using the SageTV Client (connected to server via 100Mb switch) I can watch OTA HDTV, SDTV, recorded content from OTA (including HDTV), listen to music but I cannot watch Imported Videos in the Video Library in Media Center. I get a playback error. Is there some configuration I'm missing?

I've attached a screenshot -- any help is appreciated.

(That picture is an imported video?)

Are you using UNC paths? The client now tries to access files directly -- if it can do so, it tries to play it w/o streaming via the SageTV server. Maybe the client can view the file's location but doesn't have full permission to read the file. (?)

When the Client launches, it knows the IP and name (192.168.1.101) & (p4lianli) of the server -- you can use either the IP to get there or the machine name. The path to the videos is \\p4lianli\My Videos\(folder with video)\(VIDEO_TS)\*.vob/ifo/bup --- I doubled checked and the parent folder is shared.

Oh -- yeah, I guess that makes sense... it is trying to play _something_ & the default something is live TV.

Double check the client PC's permissions for the path to the file, because DVD playback has to have direct access as far as I know.

Since it is a DVD, does the client have a DVD decoder?

I'll leave the rest to someone else since I don't play DVDs on my client via imported media.

Edit: I knew there was another recent discussion on this topic: Video files ok, DVD folders give exception error?

Andy:

Good catch. It works, but now I'm really puzzled!! I changed the path in the main SageTV unit to \\machine_name\folder\subfolder\VIDEO_TS\ and it playws fine at both the client and server.

Here's why I'm confused -- the MP3 music always worked, and the path at the main machine is c:\My Music\folder -- so the Client isn't using the UNC path.

Not that I really *need* an answer, I'm just curious. Anyway ... thanks for the help getting the Client to work FLAWLESSLY!

as mentioned in the linked thread () only DVDs need direct access to the filesystem. MP3s/MPGs/AVIs are streamed down the server/client connection
