Nielm Webserver Parental Controls
Is there any way possible to enable parental controls on Nielms Webserver?
I like the streaming viewer and the kids can now xbox and watch cartoons at the same time using this feature, and on the local LAN it is sweet. I would like to be able to filter the webpage via login, and thus they would never see questionable content. The webserver is a great add-on ......... |

Anything is possible -- it just depends how difficult.
At the moment the Sage-part of the webserver knows nothing about logins: that is all handled by the HTTP-part of the webserver, so the first thing to do would be to make the Sage part handle the authentication, and then it can be aware of different user 'roles'. This is actually on the todo list The problem comes because there is no API to check whether a program needs the parental code authentication -- I would have to write my own version of that check to compare the requested show against the parental restrictions, and then disable the 'watch' buttons.. The second problem comes because most media players cannot prompt for user/password to access a media stream, the questionable content will always be available to people of sufficient ingenuity (but thats the same for the on-disk files anyway) So for the moment, I am afraid you will have to filter the questionable content in the old-fashioned way ("You are too young to watch that -- turn it off!")
