Redundant Posts

I am starting to notice the same questions being posted over and over again in the forums. Is there some kind of expanded FAQ or something that can be done to assist this? I think it would be more polite to direct users there than to ask them to search the forums.

What does everything think would be most helpful:

1. Expand the Manual (Many posts on the forum can be answered with the manual)
2. Expand the Troubleshooting section of the website (Make it more of a technical FAQ)
3. Implement a Forum FAQ (Since most people seem to come here before doing anything else)

Thoughts to make everyone's lives a bit easier?

I would say yes to all 3. Start with the easiest first do the rest when you have time.

1. Implement a Forum FAQ (Since most people seem to come here before doing anything else)

2. Expand the Troubleshooting section of the website (Make it more of a technical FAQ)

3. Expand the Manual (Many posts on the forum can be answered with the manual)

Thanks

I think that refactoring the categories in the forum a bit might help, too.

a) 3rd party tools
b) TV cards
c) video playback
d) user interface
etc....

But then again, I'm prone to over-categorization.

If the interface does become completely customizable, skinnable or whatever, I would think that might be deserving of its own forum category.

I think their doing just fine on their own with out assistance on making redundant posts

Sorry mlbdude (Edit :i know that was taken out of context but i) just couldn't pass that up. What can i say im weak! It's sad really but i must live with it(Acctually it was to many beer's and a late night...Blame the boozel!!!!). I know i'll get ripped for that one.

Seriously though IMO rcleav's list does seem the best way to do this as it would help to cut down on redundant posts in the forums fastest. Though that is just my opinion.

I wouldn't put too much work into expanding the manual. Almost no new users seem to read any of it before posting. Just my opinion. Also the rate of change with Sage is so great that just keeping the manual current is an endeavor in itself.

As for expanding the troubleshooting section of the site... You're mostly talking about people not even doing forum searches, so I don't think that would help new users. It would help the average user, yet this forum does that well enough in my opinion.

I would think a Forum Faq would be the greatest help. I try to read all the new posts, especially from new users. But I have to say I'm getting a little tired of saying the same thing over and over. Yet, I hate to be rude and just say search the forum. A good FAQ, that we could confidently link to, would be a great help to those of us trying to help new members. And it would also be a definitive answer to more elaborate issues as it evolved.

Next time you answer a redundant question, post the answer in one of the FAQs and then post link to the FAQ in response to the question. It should be self-creating from there.
