Still stuttering, but not as badly

Hi Sage Gurus....

I got my wife an mvp for Christmas for the bedroom. Everything seemed to start off great, but then the stuttering began. I've read through the advice on this forum, and I've gotten pretty far, but there still is a bit of intermittent stuttering, not nearly as bad as it was though. Wondering if there's anything else to try, or if any improved fixes are coming down the pike soon?

FYI, I'm running on a wired network, with a BEFSR41 router, which upon reading the threads I've upgraded to the latest firmware (1.46.02, Aug 3, 2004).

The server I'm running is the Dec. 15, 2005 build (perhaps I need a newer build of this???)

I've installed the new mvp.bin, as well as the Hauppauge registry fix.

I've started and stopped the Sage Service, and unplugged and replugged the mvp.

As I said, this is much better. But still the occasional stutter/skip, just enough to really keep the wife good and pissed....

WAF on this thing would be MASSIVE if it worked without a hitch. Picture quality is excellent over s-video, remote control is dandy. Get the stuttering fixed and you won't be able to get delivery of these things from Hauppauge fast enough....

i've gone back and forth on the original and beta bin files several times.
I see absolutely no difference in functionality/performance.
In both cases the mvp displays the screen saver when powered off.

Just to be make sure i have the right files..my original file is 2654Kb and the beta file is 2662kb.

I am running Win2K....could that be an issue ?

Did you start and stop the SageTV Service on the server, and then unplug/plug the MVP? When I changed the .bin, the power-off worked immediately after performing these steps.

I think I'm going to retract my earlier post about still having problems.

The stuttering I am presently encountering only appears in one recording, in the same spots over and over, which leads me to believe it's an issue with the recording itself.

Everything else I'm watching on the MVP is working beautifully now. Good job with the fixes!!!

Could those with stuttering please post what thier CPU usage % is when the stuttering is going on with the MVP. I for one believe that is why the stuttering is occurring. Mines still gets up around 90-100% and stays there at times....

Any other updates coming down the pike _Demo_?

Working on it but it would help if we could get some more details from people having problems.

I've been experiencing the 2-3 seconds stuttering periodically. Unfortunately I haven't been able to nail down any specifics. It’s happened with both Live TV and recorded shows.

Last night it happened after pausing Live TV to take a phone call. After my wife hit play to resume it started stuttering. I first tried unplugging the MVP, but that didn’t help. I had to stop and restart the Sage service to get playback to function correctly.

I’m willing to turn on any logging that might help provide details. My wife seems pretty good at getting it to mess up. :-)

Rick…

I believe there are 3 different problems that need to be addressed.

1. After a cold boot the MVP can only be restarted at the 10MBPS or auto detect. I can never get going at a fixed 100 MBPS. I have my MVP directly connected to the serve with a crossover cable.

2. When I skip forward or backward or start playing a new video I have studdering for a secord or two. I believe this may be caused because the internal buffers may not be completely full before the video starts playing.

3. Random studdering when playing shows. This appears to be very random. Sometimes I can go for hours without seeing it, othertimes it becomes very bad. My CPU useage does not appear to go above 30% when I see the bad studdering. It does seem like my local area network useage drops from the normal 7% (100 MPBS connection) to about 5%.

Hope this helps.

edit: corrected second sentence in number 1. It is 100 MBPS that will never connect properly.
I have also installed the TCPIP Optimization patch from the Hauppauge site.

I will confirm point #2. I see this when using FF or RW on a recording. Sometimes the problem is worse and sometimes the problem goes away quickly. I'll do a quick capture when I get home to send to you on this one demo.

Thoguht I would follow up on my post...I was having a lot of toruble with Sage in general. I didn't reinstall Windows (yet), but I did uninstall SageTV, delete any remaining folders, ran a few registry clean utilities and then reinstalled SageTV from scratch, rerant he Hauppauge registry tweak, changed out mvp.bin files, re-modified my .xml from scratch with the plug-ins I wanted.

End result is perfection so far.

Have you guys tried enabling/installing the QOS Packet Scheduler? That was my fix, FWIW.

Memory Leaking... ???

When I first start SageTV with the latest 'beta' MVP plugin I see sagetv running in non-service, minimized mode at about 35k of memory.. over the next several hours, even if nothing is happening to it and nobody is using it I see it baloon to over 150,000k!! Is this normal? If I stop the program and start it again it goes back to 35k.. but I can watch it slowly grow a couple k every couple of minutes...

Perhaps SageTV does this even without the MVP.. but that is what I currently have..

What is the QOS Packet scheduler and where can I find more information about it?

I did forget to mention that I have installed the TCPIP Optimization patch from the Hauppauge Web Site.

My memory usage is always around 246,000k ... is that uncommon?

I do have the QoS Packet Scheduler installed on my system.

New observation I noticed today about the random studdering. I was watching a show with no problems. While the show was playing I decided to save a copy of the show on a external USB disk drive. As soon as the system starting copying the show, I heard the program being played slow to a crawl. My CPU useage remained very low (below 30%). The Lan transferred rate dropped from the normal 7% to about 2% or 3%. When the transfer was complete the show resuming playing without any studdering. When I got back to the MVP, I noticed that the new Media detected screen was up. I do not know for sure if it was the transfer or the new Media screen that caused the slowdown. But there is a bottleneck somewhere on my system. I am open to suggestions.

That eazy carlgar it your maybe your harddrive or IDE controller that caused the slowdown that your bottleneck can't keep up keep in mind that any time you start copying file it want use up all bandwith and drive is spining as fast it can so there for your acct seek time is cut way down do poor IDE controller.
One other possable IRQ sharing with NIC and USB controller that to can caused the slowdown.
Here an Example VIA 686b IDE controller bug
