Windows XP performace tweaks???

Anyone have a good list of services you can disable in WinXP and/or other performace tweaks that will free up resources for a dedicated Sage box?

For example, I read that disabling disk indexing will free up some CPU cycles which could be used by Sage.

In my opinion, rather than shut off services you'd be better off stripping XP of as many things you don't use as you can. If you head over to nLite you can download an excellent free program that will allow you to make a Windows XP build that is very lightweight. It's the closest thing you can get right now without using XPembedded to build an extremely fast, reliable Sage server.

Also -- of course 64k clustering on the recording partitions. Also -- the normal adjustments to memory management. e.g. permanent page file twice your memory amount and tweak your performance settings...

all that said -- i run a very beefy sage server that has Sage, HAL2000, and a S*&t ton of other programs on it... no real performance issues at all...

actually a guy at anandtech forums did a VERY detailed analysis of the performance impacts of the black viper tweaks for the 3 user tweak options black viper provides and the results were quite startling.

in ALL circumstance the black viper tweaks either made no performance difference or actually reduced performance by a small but measurable degree.

the users tests encompassed many standard applications, games and video compression codecs.

The best performance tweak for XP is a clean reinstall, only loading the apps that you absolutely need.

That is very interesting. After reducing the processes that automatically start up, there were no gains in system resources or boot times? That seems unlikely. Do you have a link to the analysis?

Also check out Tweak Guides. There is a very detailed XP tweak guide pdf there. I haven't been there in a while, but it was 166 pages back in April. It pretty much covers everything and links to alot of other resources.
