Troubles with FSE

I am having problems getting the 'Full Screen Exclusive' mode to work. I have installed the client on four different computers, two of which have an ATI graphics card and two have an Nvidia.
The Nvidia clients are working as expected, but the ATI's both have the following problem. When I start watching a recording, first it works fine, but anywhere in between 10 seconds and, say 5 minutes, the screens first freezes and then goes dark. The audio keeps on playing. Pressing stop brings me back to the menu and I can start playing again with the same result.

One system has a 9800PRO, the other a 9700. Both systems use the Nvidia decoder, but I have also tried other decoders like Cyberlink's. The only decoder that does work is the Sage decoder, but it's quality is poor. I have tried different versions of the ATI Catalyst drivers, but it makes no difference.

I know both systems are fully capable of doing renderless, as I also have Theatertek installed and it works flawlessly. For now, I am stuck with either tearing in VMR9, or using Overlay. Both options I don't particularly like.

I also sent a report to Sage, but their response didn't really help. It said:
"Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't."

Anybody know what's going on?

That pretty well covers it. With my 6600GT, I can't say it ever worked well with FSE, but between the different beta versions the problem was always different. I never had the particular problem you had.

Anyway, the least of the problems was the screen going blank after going from full screen to a window. I can't really say the video worked better with FSE than without when that was the only problem (or with any other problem). So I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you also don't notice a difference on the two computers it is working on for you.

Well, I would really like to get it to work. I feel that FSE gives me the smoothest image possible. Also with normal VMR I get tearing in the top 10% of my screen and I really don't like overlay for several reasons.

With previous version 2.2 I was able to turn off DXVA with VMR which removed the tearing almost completely. But with version 4 turning off DXVA results in using overlay. Anybody know why this is?

Can anybody confirm having FSE work properly with an ATI card?

Disabeling 3D Acceleration in Sage will force you out of VMR9. This was ALWAYS the case. To disable DXVA and still use VMR9 you need to disable it in the decoder itself. However, disabeling DXVA will force deinterlacing to be done in software and is not as good as hardware deintarlacing.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I was able to run VMR9 without DXVA in 2.2...
But that's not really important.
The bottomline is that I'd like to use hardware deinterlacing and have a tear-free image. I am unable to do this right now.
