Dumb newbie question about mvp
Hello all, am trying to get sagetv 4 and mediamvp working together, not having any luck. The wife says get it working or leave the tv alone and watch it on the computer! Uhg! Could someone walk me through this, please? Pretend you are talking to a 6 year old(no, wait, that won't work, i'm sure a 6 year old could figure this out....)

From your description I'm guessing you want something similar to what I have set up.
I've got my Sage server (where all my storage and PVR cards are) and my MVP in the bedroom. All I did was install a Sage Client on the server machine. I installed it to a seperate directory although I don't recall if that's a requirement. I.E. Sage v4 is installed in c:\program files\sagetv and Sage Client is installed in c:\program files\sagetv client. Then I just put followed the directions for installing SageMVP. I don't recall all the exact details, because it's been so long since I installed it. I've gone from Sage 2.x through the Sage 3.x betas and now onto Sage v4. Whatever problem(s) are you having, I'm sure there are lots of folks here who can help.

Lots of peeps have this working, talk to me like I am a 5 year old, step by step and is their any section of the instructions Matt includes that you don't fully understand.
I believe when I installed for first time, I got it working with the Haugpauge software first, then disabled the Haugpauge software before installing Matts client. Disable any firwalls you might have on, at least till you get it working. |

So to do this you install Sage Client. Get it working. Create a folder in the main Sage folder called MVP1, or whatever you like. Copy the entire contents of the Sage folder that has SageClient.exe in it to the MVP1 folder. Then extract the contents of SagetvMVP-1.3.0.zip into the MVP1 folder. Now I would look in the sageclient.properties file in the MVP1 folder and see if the IP address of your server is there and not local host. (This is assuming the client is on a separate PC from the main server.) You should then be able to run the startmvpclient.cmd file and have it running. Make sure the original Hauppauge MVP software is disabled, uninstalled, whatever as you do not need, or want it running. Go to the MVP, unplug the power cord, plug it back in and it should load the software and work. If you get a failed to locate GUI server message you may want to make sure the MVP is on a switch between the PC running the client software, and itself. The MVP doesn't like to be hooked through multiple switches, etc. Hope this helps... |

Thank you for your quick responses! I have had the mvp working with the Haupage software. I'm trying to keep everything on 1 computer. The wife doesn't want me screwing with her computer anymore than her tv. When I try to start the mvp, it finds the application, loads the application, trys to connect to the servers, then tells me that it can't find the gui. Do I need a Sagetv client liscence for the mvp? I'm on my 8th day of my trial with Sagetv, and I want to see how this all works together before spending money. When I get home tonight I'm going to try the suggestions you have given me and see what happens, I'll let you know...

Hey, thanks SprDtyF350! I have the video server set up in the back bedroom. Basically, all I want to do is use it as a recorder, audio sever, and to watch live tv using the mvp on the tv in the living room. I suppose the only time I would need to have Sagetv running on the server would be to configure something that I can't with the mvp, yes? I've read alot of posts and am a little confused about setting up the client in a different directory from the main program. You're not confusing me, I do that to myself all the time......

You are right. The way you want to set it up you don't really need to get into sage on the server unless it's something the MVP won't. There aren't too many things it can't do as far as setup. You also don't need Sage Client.
I cut part of the MVP setup instructions and if you follow the steps to set up the MVP as option #2 (UI for Sage TV running as windows service) you should be good to go.. As far as the folder the MVP setup goes in it really doesn't matter as long as you don't set it up in the main Sage directory. Would be confusing trying to figure out which stuff was for what. I would just make a folder like this.. C:/program files/SageTV/MVP1 and that will keep everybody separated. I think you will really like it once you get it to work.. Just keep in mind that it won't play DVD's, or Divx/Xvid type stuff. The Hauppauge software that you won't be using will, but the MVP client won't. Randy Installing MVP Client for one (or for the first) MVP There are two ways to run the MVP Client for SageTV: 1. as regular SageTV Client 2. as UI for SageTV running as Windows Service Please consult the SageTV documention for general information about installing and running SageTV Clients and the SageTV Service and its UI. Pros and Cons of the two options: #1 requires a SageTV Client license for the PC you install the MVP Client on (hey, it's not expensive ;-). With one Client license you can run any number of SageTV Clients on one PC. This includes MVP Clients. #2 doesn't require an additional Client license, but you have to be aware that you can have only one such UI instance running at once. I.e. if you have the MVP Client running, you cannot open another SageTV UI on the PC running the SageTV Service. Note: if you install the MVP Client into an existing SageTV folder (not recommended), make sure to backup it first! 3.1 Installation as SageTV Client 1. Install a fresh SageTV Client on the PC the SageTV server is running (you can use a different PC but it has to have the same drive mappings for the video folders as the server) 2. Unpack the Zip into the SageTV folder of the new Client installation 3. Set the mmc/video_format_code=8 in SageTVClient.properties if you are in PAL-land (like me in Switzerland ;-). Default is NTSC. 4. Stop all running MVP applications, e.g. the Hauppauge services MVPMedia and MVPMediaSvc, GBPVR etc. 5. Unplug the power from the MVP 6. Execute StartMVPClient.cmd 7. Power up the MVP 3.2 Installation as UI for SageTV running as Service 1. Create a copy of the SageTV folder 2. Steps 2-5 from above, but all in the just created copy of the SageTV folder 3. Make sure the SageTV Service is running 4. Execute StartMVPClient.cmd (or SageTV.exe) 5. Power up the MVP Either way, after some time the SageTV main menu should appear on the TV attached to the MVP. Don't forget to adjust the overscan settings in SageTV (Menu Setup > |

I must be really stupid.....Here is my problem. I have the client software running fine, but as soon as I copied it to folder MVP1, I can no longer get the videos to play. I am sure I am just missing something. help!!! I know it has to be something in my drive mappings?
Edit: It has to do with when i copy over the new properties file. What should i look at specifically?

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I made a complete duplicate copy of sage client in the MVP1 folder, then I extracted all the files from the mvp zip file into MVP1 and changed over localhost to the IP address of my server and when I pull up everything on my MVP player, I can see the Sage GUI but when I try to play anything (mp3's, videos etc), nothing happens. When I pull up the mpv log 0 file it states it can't find the file. ideas?

Ok, to be clear here, you can play videos from the client on the computer right? However when you try to play them on the MVP you get the error?

Before I change the client properties, it plays just fine on the client machine. After I change the properties, nothing. The MVP software on the client won't play either. I can flip thru the menus but when I try to play, nothing. I know it is because it can't find the files, and I need to know how to make MVP client find the files. I have tried several way to have the client locate the files on the network and nothing has worked.
One tidbit, I have not registered the client software as I was just trying to see how well the MVP plugin for sage worked before I actually paid for a client. Still well within the 15 day trial.

And yes I have changed the server name in the properties once I add in the new client properties. I have changed it from localhost to the IP address of my server.

Only thing I can think of that might help is to use UNC paths for your video, and import folders. There is a little blurb in the MVP client setup about making sure the mappings are the same as the server when you set it up on a separate computer. That's how mine is setup, and I really don't remember if it matters or not but something tells me it does.

Right now on my server I have it set to record to \\server\video and video is a fully shared folder (allowing anyone to make file changes) on my network. I will check to make sure the rest of the paths are set to that also. hmm...
Could it be that I haven't registered the client software?
