I like the menu. It doesn't bother be that I have to hit "OK" and then "OK" again on the remote to start watching the show. It defaults to WATCH when the menu pops up, so just tap "OK" again. What's the big deal?
But I'm always an advocate for giving the user the option or choices and let them decide what they want to do. So I'll agree that there should be an option to bypass this menu, meaning hitting "OK" once and it just plays the file, the way it was before. Btw, I think you can use nielm's dynamic menu imports and bring back the old Recording Menu Style.

Yeah, for me, I had to hit OK twice anyways in the old interface. The first one put it in the small window on the screen. The second one made it full screen.
So, it's all the same as to what I used to have to do... |

Only problem with options is if they become too many, the common user just begins to become confused. I think this has been Sage's philosophy in the past for putting a lot of options in "sage.properties" rather than in the UI itself therefore making them available but not in your face for Joe Regular.
They have put more options in the UI that used to be only accessable in Sage.Properties for v. 3.0 so it seems they are shifting gears a bit but probably are still mindful of UI option and config parameter counts. Making a simple and elegant UI while meeting a variety of peoples wants and needs is a tough task. I do not envy all the decisions they have to make. my $0.02 DFA

Joe Regular goes and buys Tivo, or if he's daring, opts for a preconfigured branded WinXP MCE box. He should stay away from SageTV, BTV, MeedioTV, Media Portal, MythTH, etc.
As much as I like SageTV, I wouldn't want anyone else to invest in it, both time and money. Unless they do it as a hobby like me, I'll have to end setting it for them, which I did for my brother and sister. But of course, when things go wrong, I have to fix it for them. Anyway, back on the options topic. A good UI can be simple and advance at the same time. You just hide the advance stuffs. I don't mean burying it in a text files with hundreds of lines, but put it somewhere deep in the menu, hidden from the commonly used menus, such as in Detailed Setup.

Just to chime in here, it is as you have noted, VERY difficult. Especially when you have users who like it the way you have it now, and you think is works better the way you're making it. I'm trying to keep the legacy feel for my STV, while keeping all the parameters in the Settings menu so people don't have to open up the properties file and potentially screw something up.
It's tough, and it takes more time, but eventhough someone once said "You can't satisfy everyone." I'm doing my damndest to try. Re: Joe Regular - I know Joe, and he's not building these boxes yet - but he wants to, and I think in the next year, he'll be able to. |

Hitting "Play" when in the guide, will bring bring up a show in the window...but in order to bring up another show, you need to hit "Stop" and then "Play" again. Another vote for the "old" style...I have enough buttons on my remote I can assign commands to.
