FASTEST DVD SOFTWARE
I thought the FASTEST DVD software for taking mpgs and dropping them onto a DVD in the fewest possible steps was Sonic's My DVD Studio v6.1. It appears that may not be the case.
My DVD re-encodes everything which results in long processing times and serious CPU and memory utilization. I don't mind if the mpg's are over 4GB and the computer must compress them but what if they aren't? Is there a better program that won't force all the mpg's to completely re-encode? Also, is there any way to make Windows free up some resources or keep a certain ammount free when that particular program is in use so that the process doesn't completly tie up a fairly fast Pentium 4 HT computer? |

I think dvd mpeg2 files have to be a very specific framerate, resolution, etc and that's why 99% of the time they have to be re-encoded. I think a few of sage's recording qualities are supposed to be dvd ready but I don't know for sure. I've switched to burning everything to divx data discs now that I have a good divx capable dvd player.

Thanks. I heard DVD Lab might be able to take them without re-encoding? Does anyone have any other suggestions of programs that can take the mpg2 output without re-encoding?

tsunami DVD author (trial available) will never re-encode.
http://www.tmpg-inc.com/product/tsda.html Most of Sage 2.2's recording qualities are DVD-ready -- especially the ones with 'DVD' in the name!

That would be great!
My SageTV quality settings are as high as my HD space will currently allow at DVD Standard Quality 3.2gb per hour. DVD Author looks like it just might do the trick if I can wrap my brain around it. I am trying it now (DVD Author Pro trial)... and it says "NTSC won't accept 480x480".

Nero will burn a DVD with no reencoding if you record in one of the DVD formats with SageTV

Ulead VideoStudio or DVD Movie Creator (I think that is what it is called...) will burn w/o reencode as well.

dvd styler
Look for the "DVD Styler" package (I think it's on sourceforge) ... it's a simplified GUI wrapper for DVD author (& free). No re-encoding, but it will de-mux/remux an MPG file during processing.
If you use VideoRedo (a very nice package & well worth the price!) for your trimming, you can save the result as a VOB ... if you use that for the source for DVD Author, you avoid the de-mux/remux step & cut the production time down even more. From starting with a single VOB to .iso image on a 1.5 hour 4.8MB/sec video can be as little as 15 minutes on my machine (if memory serves...) Nick |
