volume levels seem too low

Hi,

I figure this is probably a newbie question/issue, but my recordings with my SageTV/PVR350 seem to produce low volume recordings (hard to hear).

I recorded a few TV series this week, and played them back through the PVR350 and had to crank up the TV's volume level to its max. Is that normal? Am I missing some sort of adjustment?

I, too, have seen this problem with the PVR-250. I have the volume turned up to max on the PC and I still have to turn up the volume on the TV. I've decided that I will just have to deal with it for now, until Hauppauge gets their drivers updated.

FWIW, I don't use the output on a 350, but use the built-in sound in my PC. This is nice in that I do get some amplification.

Have you tried using the sourd card output and the s-video on on the 350 (with the applicable autio offset to keep them in sync.)?

Here's a way to modify the input volume level on the Hauppauge card:

Create the registry setting:
HKLM\Software\Frey Technologies\Common\MSPAudio\Scart1Volume

as a DWORD value. Then set it to be 7301 in hexadecimal. The 73 part of it
controls the volume. 7F is the highest settings (7F01) and 00 is mute
(0001). Here's a few other examples:

7F01 : 12dB gain
7301 : 0dB gain
7201 : 1dB loss
0101 : 114dB loss
0001 : Mute

Does this work with all installed cards? I suppose that I am asking is does one registry settiing work for all installed cards or is it one per card (scart1volume = card 1, scart2volume = card 2, etc.)

Thanks, that made a big difference with my setup. I set the level to 7F and my PVR now matches the audio level of my "regular" TV signal.

I have this same issue with one of my two setups. The output level of my STB is obviously too low. I tried the registry setting suggested here but it didn't seem to help. Is there anything else I can try?

Its a path starting at Hkey Local Machine (HKLM). Run regedit and follow the path.

Is there a different registry key for PVR-250's? I put this registry key hoping for the volume to be closer to normal TV, but was disappointed when there was no change.

Turns out that this registry setting requires a reboot to take effect. It's nice and loud now.

I just saw this thread and am trying to solve the same problem in where I have my 350 card plugging in to my Sony receiver. But since the output on the 350 is so quiet, I have to crank up the volume on the receiver to levels that I would rather not turn up to.

I don't have this path in my registry.....people who did this, did you have to create the path?

The other option I have is to use the computer's audio out....but I would rather use the 350's audio out...if someone has a solution, please let me know...thanks.

I used the advice on http://www.shspvr.com/, because that key that narflex suggest doesn't exist in my registry..

"Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hauppauge\hcwTVDlg\AudioControls
look for Scart1_Volume it the record volume level key."

And that seemed to work a bit....I also noticed on my Hauppage CD there is a MISC folder that had some reg keys and one is for audio that sets this key. But it sets it as x00000002 where in most cases we're seeing it as 00007301 by default.

I wonder if this setting has some special meaning to the hauppage cards....there is a readme file in there that says these registry keys are for people who know what "they are doing". : ) Has anyone tried this? I won't be able to try it for another 12 hours or so...

My tv seems to have a better time amplifying the audio signal from the 350 card than my receiver...so it just makes me wonder...I'll try it from straight from the computer next...

7F (+12db) is louder than my TV. I split the difference with 79 (+6db) and it sounds roughly the same as normal TV. Is the quality of the audio affected by the volume it is recorded? I get the feeling I should record the MPEG as loudly as possible, so it sounds good through cheap laptop speakers. Is there any downside to recording at +12db in terms of noise?

The down side is when you burn the MPEG to DVD. If you have the record level too high you could get distortion, or you will have to turn the volume way down.
