note the word internet

For streaming MPEG2 to SageClient, you need an 8Mbit internet uplink

Others suggest using www.Orb.com to re-encode files to a low bitrate and stream over the internet:

SageClient needs a fast (10Mbit minimum) low latency (<100ms) link to the server to be able to stream MPEG2 encoded video. there is no way you are going to manage this with 450kb (whether that is bits or bytes)!

If you are looking to do time-lapse video for surveillance: eg uploading one high quality frame every second or so, then I am afraid Sage is not the software you are looking for...

(Isn't ORB free? -- thats what it claims... never used it myself)

ORB is free. I was very disappointed with the quality though.

A friend of mine is using ORB on his EDGE 100kbs enabled PDA phone. He is absolutely amazed by it. The quality may be more acceptable on a pda screen than a laptop. I on the other hand I only have GPRS on my PDA phone and can only download at about 40kbs so I havn't tired it and have no first person point of view. I think I may try it anyway, but am worried that I don't have enough processor or bandwidth to transcode and upload while recording 2 shows and running show analyzer. Time to build a new HTPC.

The ORB website also says that they have an API for people to develop plug-ins. So my question is, who is going to develop a sage/orb plug-in with comskip support for us? It'd be nice to watch and program sage remotely anywhere I have cell coverage.

I should say I tried it on a 384kb upload connection to a system with a 19" monitor. The higher your upstream rate and the smaller the display you're using the better it should look.

The network that Sage refers to is your own personal internal network, not the Internet's network.

Thanks Blade,do you have a snapshot that you can share with 384KB ?

I read a review for orb and it said something like two/three months free and then a yearly fee !

Just try it for yourself, it only takes about 5 minutes (if that long) to set it all up.

ORB used to charge, but is now a free service. At least if they charge I can't find anything about it on their site.
