Idea, alternate Wiz.bin?

I had an idea while talking up SageTV last night at a dinner party (yeah, I'm that guy ). So, we know that wiz.bin is totally closed off and we know that Sage has no intention of ever opening it up. While, of course I feel that is short sighted, I was thinking there could be a way around that. Would it be possible for Sage to release the format of wiz.bin so that we could create an alternate wiz.bin?

Ok that was a bit confusing. My intention here is to allow for web import STVs a-la-Meedio. From previous discussions, its seems that the closed off nature of wiz.bin does not allow anyone with studio the ability to write data to it or be able to add meta data to library items and, more importantly, be able to pass that information to other programs. Is that correct? I mean, I have no idea being that I don't have studio and am many years off doing any development. Basically, I am really wanting Sage to fully work so that I can stop using Meedio already. With TVoD dead and me spending another day having to fight through Meedio bugs, I'm about ready to try HTPC life without it . I figured after a year, Sage would finally be at that point. Well I've been a Sage customer since last fall and v3 has no real improvements on the media center aspects (I've only been using it for a day though). I am starting to think that I will accept a far lesser function to my HTPC if I could just get some web imports and external program integration in Sage (especially music).

This is not correct -- eg my webserver (which is not actually written using studio) allows you to edit the show info for any video file, adding or modifying the wiz.bin data.. It's not really useful for metadata import but that *is* something on my todo list -- as you may have noticed: I'm a bit busy!...

By the way what do you mean by 'web imports'?

Oh, and you can import data into the Sage database, hopefully there will be a couple STVs with that capability coming down the pipe.

Ah, I had no idea. So one can add information to wiz.bin just not take it out? Thats actually cool with me. Sorry, by web imports, what I am reffering to is meta data stuff like cover art from amazon, episode info from tvtome, tag info for mp3's etc. I gues, more importantly, is the ability to have Sage "remember' this info and associate (e.g. display) it with the specific files that were imported. Jus tlike it does with EPG data and the stuff it records.

For 3rd party programs the ability to import databases from, for my needs, J River media center (though I'd buy another solution in a hearbeat if worked with Sage) and be able to search, see views and the like and, of course, playback. However, playback is already kind of avalible already with Cayar's STV (and probably others) via the external program launching. However, a more integrated system/UI is need for practical use. Thanks for reading!

There are STVs that create XML files with metadata for individual recordings.

That's a GREAT policy. I don't need anyone else's help making myself look bad. I do a fine job of it myself.

Goodbye Meedio *hopefully*. I know you're a Meedio user as well Crashless, do you think it will be versitile enough so one can ditch Meedio (given an acceptance of lesser functionality, of course)? I await your release with anticipation (but patiently, of course). Thanks!

In a word - yes.

BUT (there's always a but). If you're a PlayMee, or PreMovieManager user - you might miss your trailers, and offline disc requesting. But in the long run, those can be worked out with a good java programmer. (disclaimer: I'm not one...yet.)

There's a couple of steps I need to figure out before it really kills Meedio on this front, but right now, they all see do-able.

However - Stanger has figured out the hard part, now I just need to implement it.

Well, I am dreaming about renaming recordings or changing the title or description of a recording.

But one request: Would it be possible not only to release it as an new .STV but also as an STV plugin like some nielm always creates?

Yes, that will eventually be possible, but I won't make any promises on a release timeframe.

Once I get things humming, you could run my STV, import the data, then go back to another, and the data would be there because Stanger figured out how to get the data into Sage's internal database.

Obviously less than ideal, but it could hold you over until I (or someone else) can make an import.

Just to follow up on this, is there an STV that allows us to import data into WIZ.BIN?

I ended up with a FUBAR'd install after the first beta release, and now all my shows recorded before 8/1 are in one WIZ.BIN, and everything since then is in another. I'm looking for some way to combine the two, and if I could export the data from the old WIZ, then import it into the new WIZ, that should be enough to get me past this problem.

Thanks!

Have you thought about just using your old wiz.bin and just dealing with the loss of half a month's data.

Thought about it, but decided to stick with the most recent WIZ, mainly due to the fact that most of the shows in the other have been watched. But there were a number of "keepers" in there, and I would like to get everything integrated again.
