Looking for web hosting suggestions

All,
I would like to put together a web site for my family and extended family. I've looked at some of the hosting services like Globat, PowWeb, and StartLogic. These seem more e-business oriented. Any others out there that you have/do use and like?

thanks,

I use www.8-95.com for some hosting, mainly for my own email domain. They have plans from 3.95 per month or you can get a 8.95/half-year plan. They dont guarantee a lot of hand-holding (however, the forums there have plenty of helpful people), so if you need that, then another host may be for you. But if you need discount hosting, take a look.

Jack

This where I start out over 3yrs ago
http://web.tera-byte.com/

If think you need high month transfer then take look at Raq4 500GB of transfer per month, you will not any site cheaper then this with 500GB transfer per month and this what www.shspvr.com is on but if go for something like this then upgrade to 256 or the full 512MB see link below

I've used innerhost in the past, who is now http://www.interland.com/shared/ , in the past and was pleased with their service.

It won't be the cheapest -- looks like 7.95/month is their low-end plan. It's Windows-based, which is relevant if you want to do a dynamic site.

I've been with 1hourhosting for about 5 years, and have been pleased with their service.

Yahoo! small-business for me. Lots of plans, features, and add-on options.

Super-fast domain activation, email, webemail, ftp, and tech support.

I have been using www.doteasy.com for several years and have been quite happy with it. They have a $0 hosting plan that does not have any banner ads etc which workds quite well for a family/friends website. I used it for several years for a personal/family website before upgrading to a plan with them that offers scripting support and more storage.

Everyone seems to be running their own hosting "company" these days. Most basically resell services of larger companies. I'd suggest going with a larger company like Godaddy as AndyS suggested. Not likely that they'll be going out of business and leaving you wondering where your website went.

I've had a couple of bad experiences with GoDaddy not answering requests to release domain names to other DNS registrars.

why not just register your own domain name for $3-$10 and just host it yourself. Im assuming that you already have a dedicated server (sage server maybe?)..

If its just a family website, im sure that any upload speed over 40k would be fine.

Just a thought...

I.
