I don't mean to dishearten you, but I had something just like that going on with my old HP - running BTV. For the life of it, I couldn't find out what's causing it. I ended up replacing the box with my (now 5 year old) current server. Those things are notoriously hard to hunt down.
Did you test the ram? Did you try a different video card? Any clues in the XP event logs? Audio drivers can be trouble, too. I don't recall ever reading about this hauppauge causing trouble like this. |

Power supply - never count out power supply problems.
Have you tried watching movies with another program when sage isn't running? If it still crashes, it might be a codec error. During those 10 seconds, is it totally normal? Or are there other oddities? Also, are you using any periferals? (I can never spell that...) There could be a conflict. |

well i used it as a file server for quite a while, about 3-5 months now
power supply is pretty beefy for that setup, its like 10 sec the moment i startup sagetv, for the time to get to a live broadcast, it'll die around that time. for the video i do see its perfectly fine. i really think its a hardware problem because when i bought the card i tested it on another comp and it worked more than 10 sec. guess i'll have to give up on this file server |

so as long as you don't play a file it doesn't crash?
Or is it crashing when you start recording something? Maybe it's the pvr500. what motherboard are you using? The PVR500 has a couple of serious incompatbilities. |

I'd try a different video card first (if the ram's ok).

what favius said... I've seen a video card overheat and reboot a machine on more occasions that I care to think about. Try opening the case and blowing a box fan directly into it before going to the trouble of ripping it out and replacing it... But considering the short amount of time we're talking, if it's the video card it's probably not going to help attempting to cool it more. It's probably shot.

hmm i'll have to check out the vid card then since i lent it out and haven't checked if it workedworked, and last i gave it out gpu fan was making loud noises. so it might have bit the dust.
thanks for the tips |

Also re-install Java -- I have seen Java cause system crashes...
