Wireless Keyboard and Mouse that goes ~10ft?
I currently have a Creative Labs wireless keyboard and mouse but the things sucks! The keyboard and mouse have to be within 2-3ft of the base!
I want something where I can have about 10 ft of distance between the receiver and the KB and mouse. Any suggestions? The cheaper the better too. |

It's not cheap, but I really like my Logitech DiNovo with it's Bluetooth connection. My couch is about 10 feet away from my HTPC and I've never had a problem of the keyboard, mouse or media pad not connecting to the base unit.

Also do a search for "RF wireless keyboard" Those have a much longer range.

My Gyration keyboard & mouse work pretty well from a distance. It probably isn't too cheap, though.

Probably cheaper than the Bluetooth DiNovo.

Try moving the receiver box at the computer. I typically use my old logitech optical desktop 10 feet from my computer. If the receiver sits on the top middle of the computer case the range drops to 4 feet. Place the receiver on top the PSU area, range drops to 1 foot. Move the receiver over the PCI slot area of the case, range increases to 10 feet.
There are many RF noise generators in a computer case and most can cause interference if a receiver is too close. All RF gear in the US carries a disclaimer to reorient or move the receiver if undesired operation results. Try moving the receiver as far away from the computer as possible and see if the range increases. |

I second the gyration kb and mouse, the mouse works by either optical sensor on a surface or you can hold in the air and works by the motion of your hand.

I placed a USB hub next to my couch with a long USB cord running to the computer. This allows me to use a cheap wireless at the couch and wired USB joysticks/pads. I found that the long-range keyboards/mice were very expensive.

Thats what I have and its great. It cost me about $99 a year and a half ago. They even released a media center edition shortly after I bought mine. Specifically geared to htpc's. |

Very pricey but very good. You get what you pay for. I bought the business edition. Comes with an extra lithium mouse battery. A cradle for the extra mouse battery. It does up to 4 devices, kb and mouse being 2 of them. The business editioin goes 100+ feet through walls! I control my htpc in the family room from the back yard gazebo and hot tub! It runs about $230 |

Best Buy has the normal version with the new mouse (5 button) and the smaller laptop style keyboard for 124 dollars. That's what I picked up last week.

On my desktop, my logitech cordless desktop mouse operates from a good 6 ft away...
On my media server, I use a manhattan IR keyboard+trackball (very occasional use only) for UKP20... (Froogle link) which although it is IR line-of-sight only, has a good 10ft range

Re the 5-button mouse. The Gyration web site says that this one operates at 2.4 GHz. Isn't that possibly the worst frequency to choose vis a vis interference with a wireless LAN?
(I use their "professional" mouse/keyboard with my HTPC. Works great.) Last edited by David Lawrance; 06-24-2005 at 10:33 PM. |

it is potentially the worst... but I am using it with a 802.11g usb nic sitting right next to it... I don't stream video though. I just copy them off my sage box to my main desktop for editing commercials out...

has anybody tried the Microsoft Mini Wireless keyboard with onboard mouse that has a 30' range ZV1-00004
I am very interested in this product but nobody seems to have it yet. I want to buy something soon, but will wait for this if somebody can give me a good review. I will stilll use the Hauppauge 45 button remote since it works perfectly for my needs, so I am more interested in the keyboard, mouse and range performance.

The Logitech LX500 works across my family room, about 12 feet. Cheap, too.

Cool. I'll probably just buy from BB and if it doesn't work well, then I will return it.
Thanx

I'm really looking forward to the MS keyboard as well. If it is anything like their remote, it will kill the majority of the competition.
Although it isn't RF, anyone who has used the IR remote from them will tell you it is easily the strongest IR remote available. I regularly get 35+ feet out of mine, even bouncing off walls. -PGPfan |
