Cayars18E creating XML files

Hi,

I see that Cayars18E is creating XML files on every show I record.

Fine.

Well... but....

a.
What do I do with them? Why would I want them?

b.
If I do not want them, how do I prevent Cayars from creating them?

Oliver

I believe they get created all the time (I could be wrong here). He was going to use them for compression and other things.

This was 1 of several reasons I switched back to Version 17...

The xml files would make perfectly sense if SageTV/ Cayars STV can display the contents of them.
My Wiz.bin was damaged somehow, now I have 50% of my shows without any information in my imports. But I do have the XML files...
I think Cayars said that he wants to display the infos (like the .my files) in Cayars 19, but oh well...

Cayars jokes aside: Does ANYBODY have a use for these show.xml files? In this or any other stv? Outside of Sage?

My sage encoder program actually uses them. It's an easy way for me to get the information and thus create better file names. There's actually a few bits of information I'd like added to the XML files...

Can you give me a list of all the information you would like in the XML file? I'm thinking about having ShowAnalyzer output them.

Jere Jones,

Here's what I'd really like. Dump all known fields about all the recordings and recording schedule into a file. I just want access to the data. There's no way to do this very simple thing without Studio. This is something I and others have wanted for a long time. With access to the data, we can make selective backups, automate DVD making, do debugging, etc.

How about just dump all the fields into some file (or files)? File name, encoder used, recording mode, etc. I would like to be able to select a menu from my client and have it output this information into a file on the client. All I'm looking for is what should be pretty simple for someone who has Studio, just a traversal of the data structure.

Right now, cayars STV is valuable to me just because of the data access. I don't even care about all the features, I just want access to the data.

The big items I'd like to see/need are the show name and the episode title, additionally it'd be nice to get the episode number for sorting purposes. Other information could be used in the future also, but those are the main 3.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I really don't know why "The Management" doesn't use a publicly available and open standard for the database. I believe I heard that they even encrypt the database now, but... really, come on-- you have all kinds of people programming their hearts out to add functionality to your app, you have areas where the app is deficient, and you have a protectionist defensive attitude toward *my* data?

/RANT off

I'm sure there are reasons behind this decision. I just can't think of any nor want to just at the moment.

Cory
(kind of off topic I know, sorry)
I also could come up with lots of ways to use an export of the database.
What I would really like is the ability to export and import show information, so I could do an effective "merge" of show info when my db gets messed up for whatever reason (I do backups, thanks..)

cnovak: long story, and I don't know the full details... It may have been the case that in the past, when the data was subscription based, Zap2It may have required that the EPG data was not available outside of Sage, which required an encrypted DB (other EPG providers still require this).

Now that the DB works well, I would imagine that Sage have other priorities than changing the DB engine/format...

You all want an export of the data. Hmmm... that's kind of possible. See the xml files Cayars STV creates....
But without an reimport there's no backup....
