to be truthful i find it more simple to use dvd profiler and sort my discs by number. i have 2 x 250 disc books numbered 1-500 (pretty much full now) and just search dvd profiler for the disc i want to access.

i haven't tried the dvd profiler plugin that mlb/stanger made but hopefully it has disk numbering shown on the screen. that would be perfect and a darn site cheaper than something made by imation that will probably fail inside of 1 year.

Just get a carosel drive, then have Sage find and play the correct disk.

while sagemc does support DVDprofiler information, it only supports it for files on the HD---so your offline collection will not show up unfortunately. This would be great if there was a way to view offline content, with all data, and have sage prompt you to 'insert disc X'.

The application that comes with this keeps a record of what is stored in it and where it is. I was even thinking a step further in having it scroll the list of what is in the storage device, then after selecting the one you want having it eject the disk then prompt you to put it in the dvd drive. Now that's not asking too much is it?

I like the idea of this device because it can serve more than just DVD-Video discs. You could create a front-end for the database to serve Xbox games, PC games, or anything else for that matter.

But, for movies, I agree with GbrNole:

Something like that, is more cost-effective on a per-disc basis, and can play the disc automatically too. With some girder automation, you could make it seamless to the user.

That said, I still am working through ideas to make it work for PC and Xbox games...

Very true, but a quick calculation gets roughly 2.8TB of storage for 400 dvds. That's a lot of HD space, and I've never seen a DVD-Rom changer for a PC. If you have, I'd be VERY interested to learn about it. So you're still relegated to manually loading the disc. That's too much work for me.

Although I'm sure it won't 'interest' you that much Vince, don't forget the NEC 5-disc changers (circa 1995). They never caught on, but is was amazing to see a single 5-1/4 inch drive swallow 5 disks and play them back/switch them with no trouble at all.

*PUO = Prohibited User Operations - can't ff during trailers, etc.

Well your figure is a little high, I have 200 DVDs ripped and they are using .99TB. That's full quality but with the menues/extra/surplus audio stripped out.

Of course if you've got some time, you could get that down to at most 400GB for 200DVDs if you were to re-encode them to a more advanced format (XviD, H.264, etc). But that would result in a quality loss.

I hear you can get them relatively cheap on eBay. But you're limited to DVD at a time.

So you're still relegated to manually loading the disc. That's too much work for me.

I'd probably rather pick a DVD off the shelf an insert it manually than use a changer, if using the changer meant giving up using the HTPC.

ps. what's PUO?
