How to broadcast games from home to work?
I am wanting to use SageTV to record some games this week at home and be able to watch them at work over the internet.
Any ideas on how I can do this? I would like the least amount of lag as possible.

You would need a static IP address for your SageTV server. Your office PC would need SageTV Client. Not sure what your bandwidth is at home or work, but I wouldn't try any of the MPEG-2 profiles, because you might lose frames or be constantly buffering due to the file size. VCD would probably work ok, or a Divx Portable profile.
Or if not SageTV Client, then a way to access the files directly through a network share or web server, but you'd really want to set up web streaming.. and I'm not sure that is within Fair Usage or Frey licensing.

I have manged to stream VLC from home to work (once I set VLC up to stream over HTTP at 1/4 resolution and at the bitrate of my ADSL uplink: 128Kbit...).
To set it up, I needed to be able to use ultraVNC to remote control my PC and start VLC from work, and setup dynamic DNS service so that I could know what my IP was at any time (like what is requried for external access to my webserver) But suffice to say, it was nearly unwatchable! Postage stamp sized blurry video and muffled sound, with high movement scenes being a mess (well, what did I expect for 128Kbit/s: MPEG2 video is about 5,000Kbit/s!) Of course if you have a faster uplink, you may get better quality, but even a reasonable quality MPEG4 encode at 700Mb/hr (as discussed in another thread) works out at 1,500Kbit/s!

Well in 2-3, maybe more year's time when we have 10Mbit full duplex bandwidth into and out of our homes it may be possible.
Then we will have to explain the high traffic through the company's router........ Until then I use a 40Gb laptop 2.5 harddisk in a USB2 enclosure. I load it up before work and take it with me to catch up on the night's or other recordings. |

I can eliminate one issue - you dont need a static ip, just sign up for a dynamic dns (dyndns.org, others too). Some routers (like linksys wrt54g) will automatically update your ip with the service when your ip changes.
As for the bandwidth...I cant help. |

No kidding, I don't see how all of these people have time to watch TV at work... Even if it is just on in the background.
I've fired people for doing stuff only a tenth as unproductive as that... heh. Jason Quote:

I'm an engineer responsible for the TV station at work, so I can justify it as "verifying signal quality" or some such. I installed a tuner card in my PC since I don't have the desk space for a dedicated monitor on my desk. I have the volume turned down and if my supervisor walks in, I change the channel to the station

I'm just a lazy no good sloth drone who dedicated 11 years on the same job to do as little real work in a 7.5 hour day as possible. It helps to have your boss be the son-inlaw of the owner and who's mission in life is to do nothing and take 110% credit for the little bit of "real" work that is done by our/his 6 member team. Burned DVD's of TV shows and 1.5 hour lunch breaks "he takes 2 " are the order of the day by "his" team. Ahhhh thank god for Government contracts and the campaign contributions the owner gives to get them.
