Question Antivirus Software

Hi all,

For the last 2-3 years I have avoided antivirus software, because of bad experiences in the past.

Has it improved any?

In particular, I had problems with video stuttering and playing games.

I don't run any antivirus software on my Sage box since all I use it for it home theater stuff.

If you want to try some free antivirus software I highly recommend Avast! Antivirus Home Edition.

I can also recommend AVG Anti-virus Free edition (www.grisoft.com). Very fast; also has POP3 and SMTP proxy so your email gets scanned before it hits your mail program; and does not affect Sage (I was running it on my Via 1Ghz C3 with Sage with no probs)...

I run Symantec Antivirus 9 on my Sage box. No problems (I set it to not scan the video directory though)

AVG is free and decent, but it does tend to let viruses write themselves to the hard drive before they're detected. The "free version" update server is regularly down.

I'll second the recomendation of AVG. I'm using it on all my machines (1 Sage Machine, 2 SFF systems, 1 Laptop). Automatic updates, Email scanning, and you can change the settings so that if an update comes that requires a reboot (not all that often, most updates are installed without a reboot) it will wait until the next time you reboot to perform the update. That way you don't end up cutting off a recording because AVG needed to reboot the machine to install the update.

I also have all my family on AVG for several years now and the only time any of us has gotten a virus was when they didn't perform updates and a new virus came out. NOTE: That was with an older version of AVG where automatic updates didn't work all that well with a dialup connection if the update time came and the machine wasn't online. Now it seems to perform updates as soon as the next connection is made after the update time you have it set for.
