Sage hangs at "User Interface Manager is Initializing"

I got Sage back in November and I continue to be plagued by this problem. When Sage is starting up, it will hang at "User Interface Manager is Initializing". This has happened with every skin that I have tried. I tried editing the sage.properties file and manually changing the skin back to originalv2.stv. This works, and allows Sage to start normally with the default skin, but eventually this too develops that same user interface loading problem. The only solution I've found so far is to completely reinstall Sage, which is a huge pita as you can imagine. I have tried various versions of Java, with no effect. Sometimes the htpc will make it for a week or two with no problems, sometimes it only makes it a couple days. I've also tried a complete format and reinstall. This is becoming incredibly frustrating and frankly I sort of regret getting Sage now. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not sure of the cause for that (maybe tech support would), but if you are going through reinstalls anyway, how about trying the latest beta to see what happens? If it still happens with that, you could fill out a bug report and you will at least have log files to submit to help track it down.

Some people have reported that there was a (bad?) recording file that was causing problems and the hang went away after removing any such files. Check your recoridng dirs for any recent incomplete recordings and try moving them to some other dir that SageTV does not use before starting SageTV again. Other than that, all I can suggest is to try submitting a support request to try to track this down.

You can also use NTFileMon from www.sysinternals.com to monitor what files Sage is reading during startup in order to see what file it might be hanging on...

Hi

Thanks for the pointers ... I saw the posts on the corrupted mpeg files but I moved all from the sage record directories, no luck.

Finally I found the problem ... seems (not sure who / what does this) that something went and created .bak files of certain key files in the system. Like the properties files etc. It also created a backup of my STV plugin file from MCEXCOM. The new file was the culprit (I found it by turning on the consoledebug in sage TV) I replaced the stv file with it's backup that was created the day before and "whala" ... SageTV started up again.

I'm not sure what created those backup files, but somehow the new file was corrupted ... it had all kinds of trouble from initializing the PVR cards to a bunch of java runtime errors. I still have the file around, but not sure anyone would care

Thanks for the help

I made a backup of my working STV after I customized the way I like it.
This user interface hang happens to me on occassion and I fix it by replacing my saved STV file. I don't know what causes it really but it only had started to happen after I introduced my MediaMVP.

If you can reproduce that, send the STV to tech support so they can look into solving it. If a problem gets introduced into an STV through normal usage, they'll need to see the file, otherwise these types of things never get fixed.
