Talking Lost 24!

So last night I thought that 24 was being recorded and I could watch it later that evening. Boy was I wrong. My 2 year had gotten hold of the remote and clicked the power off button. So when I turned on the tube all I saw was my computer desktop looking back at me and laughing.

Is there a way that I can prevent this from happening (besides not letting my 2 year old have the remote) (ie lock the power button done on the remote)? I am using an ATI remote wonder remote (love it).

Also, can someone give me a brief summary of what happen on 24?

A security model in Sage is exactly what is needed to solve situations like this. This type of issue has plagued users since the days of VCRs and is certainly more important now given the power of PVR software. No PVR software (AFAIK) has addressed this issue. SageTV could leap ahead of the competition by implementing some form of security to address this and other scenarios in order to prevent unwanted/accidental deletions, improper conflict management, etc. Basically, if you run SageTV like I do then you have hundreds of hours of actual and scheduled content sitting in full vulnerability in your living room.

I have posted some of my ideas for security here but so far not many people have shown interest or posted any discussion points.

I can't believe that there aren't more people than you or I who would like to have some ability to lock down SageTV as desired while leaving it available for TV watching by the whole family.

I'm forced to conclude that either most people here are single/no kids and thus simply do not understand/care, or they've found some other workable solution (in which case let's hear it).

Cheers
Lester

What did the power button actually turn off? For current solutions... if it closed SageTV, you could simply redefine what the power button does so that it doesn't close SageTV, you could set SageTV to go to sleep instead of exit when it gets a command to exit, or you could try using the service so that it will record your shows regardless of whether the UI portion is running or not.

I think the best bet would be to set Sage to start as a service and set your power button to suspend the computer. That way the Sage Service will just bring your HTPC out of standby for the recording.

P.S. 24 was awesome last night.

if the remote's power off buton sends alt-f4, then one solution is running as a service, another is setting sleep_on_close=true in the sage properties file so Alt-f4 puts sage to sleep.

I also suppose you could set a windows screen saver with password so you can't do anything until the password is entered.

The power button shut down sageTV. How do you redefine ATI's Remote Wonder's power button. I have heard of two many problems with sageTV as a service to go that route just yet. I finally got my system to be stable. I am still having stuttering problems, but am working on fixing that.

it worked for me when I was still using the ATI software, but I use Girder now, so I can redefine all the buttons to do what I want with different actions for a simple press and for if I hold the button down...
(note: I think I got the property name right -- it's something like that anyway)

No PVR software (AFAIK) has addressed this issue

Tivo addressed the issue of somebody accidentally hitting the power button, by not having one on Tivo. And erasing shows and recordings etc.. take effort and brains, therefore somebody old enough to beat down when they do it

Not sure if you solved this problem, but the new ATI RW software includes Power Off confirmation ...

See attachment ...

BTW ... 24 is my overall favorite ... They have mastered the end of show hook. I don't know how people can wait a whole week!! ... So, I end up buying the entire Season in DVD. We have 24 marathons at my house! So far we topped out 6 in one day ... Haven't gotten Season 4 yet ... It's seems like a long wait for January to come and start Season 5 but I think I better get started with 4 real fast!!

Yea, I know ... but 24 is "special"!

... and I didn't want to deal with skipping commercials
... and I wanted to have it for future viewing
... and not have to archve the whole season taking up HD space for other shows
... and I was too lazy to burn them.

So, in this case I just bought it for $40 or so ...
Trust me though ... Everything else though is Saged !!!

"Almost" being the operative word considering each ep is probably between 38 and 45 minutes long.

I actually did it for Season 1-3 with my brother. It was the oposite feeling for us... we just couldn't stop because we always wanted to know what was coming up next! We wanted to do 24 in a day but we decided that we needed the sleep...
