Question De-interlacing seems lame with FFDShow

Hi all,

I installed my eHome Wonder last night and after a little fiddling managed to get SageTv working (2.1.10) with no real problems but I'm having some de-interlacing problems.

I want to scale the video and then deinterlace in FFDShow but can't seem to get any decent results using any of the FFDShow deinterlace filters.

I have Descaler 5 installed and Elecard but if I enable them in Sage TV then try and scale the default overlay it grinds my 2.2ghz Athlon to about 3 fps (scaling to 720p).

The intervideo+VMR9 combination does a very nice de-interlace but cannot be scaled with FFDShow and if I choose DScaler as my de-interlacer in FFDShow (with FFDShow MPEG decoder enabled in Sage) I am unable to see any available DScaler plug-ins to use in the FFDSHow Dscaler configuration window.

Can anyone suggest a decent solution for scaling and de-interlacing in FFDShow?

Many thanks

Joel

I guess I should be more specific about my display devices too.

I use a digital projector (BenQ 5120) and a flat panel monitor, so everything is progressive - should I be using Bob & Weave for these types of display?

As much promise as there is, I've never seen spectacular deinterlacing with ffdshow. FWIW, the Dscaler deinterlacing option in ffdshow is in regards to Dscaler 4, you have to install Dscaler 4 and then point ffdshow to the directory where it's deinterlace filters are.

What video card are you using?

I'm using a 9700 pro with latest cats from Ati.

I was reading up a little on the new Nvidia codecs that you guys have been discussing but not sure if they would help my situation at all. Apparently someone was able to assign the Nvidia codec usinf FFDShow.

I saw the Anime screenshot I think you posted on that thread which was pretty large and seemed to do a nice job of scaling - how was that acheived at that size?

Also, should I be de-interlacing before scale or after?

It might help, although probably not as much as it would if you had a Geforce 6. What do you have for decoders? Have you tried running in DXVA (hardware accelleration) mode? I've never seen anything deinterlace as good as DXVA on either my Radeon 9500 or Geforce 6800 (of course the 6800 is much better )

Very simply, I set my resolution to 1776x1000i (1080i compensated for overscan) and used the new nVidia decoders (DXVA mode) with my 6800 with VMR9. Maybe I'm blessed with not being really picky, but for me, ffdshow never seems to give me anything worth the sacrifices it forces on you. You may get incrimentally better scaling with ffdshow, but the deinterlacing (when using ffdshow, not necessarily deinterlacing IN ffdshow) is FAR less consistent than I get with DXVA.

You have to deinterlace before you scale, otherwise you're scaling an interlaced image, and that will just cause problems.

Thanks for all the replies, this is helping quite a lot.

Yep it seems that I should leave FFDShow to do it's thing with my recorded progressive media which it excels in.

I saw the DXVA mode options in the menu but had no idea what they did so haven't played with them much.

It seems that many people are very impressed with the new Nvidia decoders so I will try them combined with VMR9 and Standard Q DVD quality.

Do I just choose the options from the DXVA menu in SageTV and then play my content?

I assume you have definitions of the different modes here on the site somewhere so I'll go and look for them now.

Actually I don't mess with the DXVA settings in Sage. Just enable DXVA in your decoder.
