diy hard drive enclosure

I am thinking of building an external hard drive enclosure for multiple hard drives. I have a gutted out DVD player which would look nice next to all my AV and HTPC equipment. I was wondering how hard it would be to convert the case into an external HDD case. I am not looking for a Raid setup.
I want to just add HDD as needed. Up to 4 that is.

I do have a mini ITX board and I know I could just make a mini pc with HDD but is there anyway to connect 4 HDD to one firewire or USB connector and fit this all in a DVD case with a few fans for cooling. I will be adding HDD as I need them or are on sale. I would prefer doing this with S-ATA drives and maybe some sort of controller card that does not need a the mini-itx connected to it just like mobile hard drive system you connect via usb or firewire

I have ideas but in truth if you don't have enough experience to come up with the ideas I'd highly suggest you you don't go that route. Personally, I wouldn't want the noise of a bunch of HDs and their cooling fans and powersupply in my AV stack.
