You can already do this, you can use an instance of SageTV as an encoding server. Basically as a network encoder but you use SageTV instead of SR. Note that there's no intelligence in the encoding server, it's just slaved like SR.
Is this setup covered in the SageTV manual?! Could solve my digital cable box serial channel changing control problem using SR network mode.

No, it is not in the manual, as it is a new development that is not fully supported by Frey yet. I think it is not completed yet, but tech support has mentioned it to a few people to try out. It was mentioned a couple time on the forum, but here is one post I know of.

Thanks! I must be slipping. Somehow today was the first I recall hearing of that SageTV ability.
