Since your on the topic, Im running Sage 2.1 and direct X9 and also cannot check 3D acceleration.. What are benefits of having it checked?

you cannot use VMR9 without 3d acceleration being enabled

If one happens to be using Overlay (not VMR9) what are the pros and cons of using 3D accelleration?

I can't really think of any benefits, but one con would be that you loose partial transparency with overlay.
