Adding CC support for PVR-150/500MCE?

This may not be the correct forum, but if it gets done, it will be here first...

Is there any hope for CC (closed captioning) on these two new cards? I read they are every bit as good as my 250, but have no CC support for some reason.

Can someone enlighten me or let me know why it can't /can be done?

The Hauppauge PVR-250 & 350 cars are currently supported for CC. The reason is that Hauppauge added code to their drivers to allow this. They didn't add this same functionality to their other cards 150,500, USB2, etc...

However, each of these cards can actually capture CC data. There is a standard method for doing this in DirectShow and it's done by reading Line 21 in the graph. This method (Line 21) will/should work with EVERY CARD that supports CC data as it's the standard.

I can't tell you why Jeff did it the way he did it so don't ask. My guess however is that the driver approach was way easier and he was only "testing" and found out it worked well so he released it that way.

Off the record I'd suggest everyone send a request for CC capture on other cards besides the 250/350.

BTW, even if you don't use CC on the OSD display, the new code I added to use CC when MUTED is nice and of course it helps ComSkip work better also.

Could be... The manual states that SageTV's current use of CC is "experimental and unsupported". I don't know what that means regarding when or if it will be changed, but it does recognize that it is non-optimal at the moment.

[Edit: This was split from Cayars' STV thread.]

"experimental and unsupported" should be "experimental and unsupported and works well"

Sorry, but I am not understanding. I thought the problem was with the driver from Hauppage, not the way CC is implemented in SAGE...

I was actually going to buy some more Sage Client licences to distribute Sage around my house that's being built. I was going to upgrade my Sage Server to 6 tuners using the PVR-500's before I found out that there was no CC support for those cards. Now my whole project is on hold until this is sorted out (no way am I wasting money on the PVR 250's just to get CC). The two things that are showstoppers for expanding my Sage system right now are:

1) Closed captioning support for the PVR-500 (and PVR-150 I guess but I'm only planning on buying PVR-500s)
2) Ability to designate one or more tuners as LiveTV only so that my Sage Clients (mainly the one exposed to guests and kids) NEVER have to deal with conflict resolution dialogs from Sage. (Ideally I'd allocate 3 tuners for LiveTV only to service the three Sage Clients; the other three tuners should be enough to handle my recordings)

Without the two showstoppers above solved, I cannot get "budget approval" for the purchase of additional licences and equipment. There are other requests I have as well but they are not showstoppers and thus a discussion of those requests properly belongs in another thread.

Cheers
Lester

Well the 150/500 supports CC the way MCE does it, so I think he was refering to glodal support from all capture cards like MCE. This is totally different than the ind driver support the 250/350 has, as it is universal and should work with almost any card.

I really want this aswell, it's a pain to be limitted to just using the 250/350 if you require CC. It's such a wanted feature that I'm unclear as to why it's taking Sage so long to impliment it.

I've got my finger crossed that this type of CC support and eclusive fullscreen will make it into the current beta before it goes gold. I would hate to have to wait till future version to get these seemly simple things added.

Makes sense now.
