Video Freeze

I was playing around with some of my video settings and somehow screwed up some setting and can't figure out what I did. I reset everything I tweaked and no luck. I was adjusting the Open GL and Direct 3D of my video card. and started to adjust the DXVA mpeg modes but have switched back to default.
on reboot my sage loads I begin to play TV and after a few seconds the video freezes. the progress bar still moves on the bottom, menus still work. I can change channels but a few seconds after they will also stop.
as I am typing this the video started playing, as if it needed to catchup. the video is real choppy.
I use the overlay renderer, same as before. Intervideo non css video decoder for hauppauge.
I have a hauppauge pvr250, ATI rage fury pro128, P4 1.7 Ghz.
while the sreen freezes my cpu drops to less than 5%.
