How do I convert an MPG into a format the PVR 350 can decode?

I have some imported mpeg videos which play ONLY in the Sage GUI and will not go to the TV-Out of the PVR 350 (although the sound does).

I tried downloading TMPGEnc (the freeware version) although I found its UI to be rather obscure, and couldn't for the life of me get it to show me the internal format of the MPG that won't play right, but I tried to re-encode it to an MPEG 2 stream (assuming that the input was MPG1). But apparently I didn't set everything "quite" right. I had a partial success: the resulting MPG DID display through the PVR 350 TV-Out, but any attempts to fast-forward or rewind it would completely lose everything: sound and video. (Oddly enough, Sage has no trouble fast-forwarding or rewinding the ORIGINAL mpg, though it won't display through the 350.)

So: I just need remedial information on what are the correct settings to apply to an MPG to make it readable by the 350?
