Sage UI Security

Maybe this has been done and I haven't noticed it, but is there any way to configure Sage menus so that to get to certain menus you need a security code? This would mean if a user wanted to get into say an Advanced menu to change settings they would need a passcode. It would prevent the non-techie types in my house from messing up Sage.

Since this is kinda on the same topic, has anyone considered user profiles in sage?

Such that different users can have different guide searches, different channel lineups (what the hell do i need Life network for).

Take it a step farther and have the Favorites user specfic, however where overlaps occur only record it once. And where overlaps occur the video is not deleted until ALL users have either watched or deleted it.

I know those items probably go beyond the scope of an STV. Just wondering if anyone else has thought of them?

I thought of them and made requests for these types of features over a year ago.

I don't think it will happen for a while. As much as I'd love to be able to do some of these things at the STV level I only do some of them (and intend to). Some of these things are in the "core" of SageTV and I don't have access to them.

BTW, the not deleting the show will only go so far because the system will delete it for space reasons sooner or later as per usual.

Before I dive into this too much I really want to know what Sage Media 3.0 will have. Who knows but it may do this out of the box.

Oh yeah I am sure most of what I mentioned would require core features to be in place.

And for deleting that would of course be superseded by the delete for space.

I would think any PVR that starts to really tackle the WHOLE HOUSE media server will need to start including per user requirements.

Other things that could be done (not that I need them, no kids) but timed viewing access control and censor controls. So kids could have say 1 hour TV a day allowance and can only use it during certain hours on certain shows/show types.

Hear! Hear!

I've been pounding on this for a while. I appreciate Cayars taking the effort to tackle the security issue in his STV but some of the security stuff really has to be handled at the core level. Security is one area where SageTV can really stand out among the other PVR apps. I don't think there's a single PVR app out there that has tackled the security aspects of running such an application in a family scenario. A well thought out approach to this would give SageTV a big jump on the other PVR apps.

I have several architectural approaches to this that I think would address the issue very well. I'd be prepared to commit my approaches to paper and pass it on to Jeff if I was sure he'd at least take a look and comment (and hopefully implement) it.

Cheers
Lester
