The first 5 results in a google search for directx 80040111 suggest that the video codec is not correctly installed. The second result has a bunch of troubleshooting suggestions...
If this was the case I shouldn't be able to play the file in WMP outside of SageClient right? It plays fine on Client pc in WMP though. I have tried to reinstall DX9c and codecs anyways and still the same error message.

Are you running dual monitors/cloning/etc on the client? What about video cards, is it different on the client? How about video drivers, directx version?

You may want to contact support about this, since it plays on the server.

I'll put it this way, to the best of my knowledge there's no reason a client can't play something that's playable on the server. Now it's possible you've found something that isn't, but if you have then it's a bug and you should report it to Frey and get it resolved.

One thing that I don't recall being mentioned: check that the renderer on the client is the same as that on the server, or set it to 'default'... It could be that the mp4 filter does not work with your chosen renderer....
Also try using a different player then WMP (zoomplayer, or media player classic, or even graphedit (File: render media file)... WMP can download the codecs it thinks it needs...

Have to admit...AutoGK is an easy solution. I work in the IT field (just not in the AV portion of it) and most of the methods for taking DVD to MP4 are just confusing. Even if you do have plenty of technical knowledge. AutoGK at least makes the task easy to do. Just wish it was a tad more customizable.

I have done a few encodes in AutoGK over the last couple of days. I seem to get a pretty noticable loss in quality using that over recode using the same filesize. I can definitely live with it if that is what I need to do. However, if I can get these files to play in Client then I would much rather stick to Recoded files for the following reasons
1. about 20% faster encode times.
2. about 15-25% better enocde quality
3. easier interface.
4. a couple of encodes using AutoGK was out of sync with audio, never happened to me in Recode.

I still get the same error whether using any settings, VMR9 or overlay or any decoders. The odd thing is sometime it works, most of the time I get that playback error. I submitted to Frey support, they told me to try the elecard decoder, so I'll give it a shot when I get home.

just to make sure it is possible to play file in Client, I installed Client on the same machine as server. The file plays fine. So this is not a Client software limitation and must be the laptop I was using for testing. I have one other good machine P4 2.8, 1GB ddr400, 2x200GB Sata Raid-0, ATI 9600 AIW. I will try it on this machine sometime this weekend and see if it works there.
I have hope yet...

Alright, I am getting totally disgusted with this. I installed SageClient on the same pc as Sage and can play the mp4 file in Client on same pc. I have my cousins PC which has the identical hardware on it. I took an image of my main pc installed it on my cousins and uninstalled Sage and installed client. There should be NO problem playing the file now right?
WRONGGGGGGG......
Same error message. Is this a problem with streaming the file?
From what I hear, if Sage can play it the Client has to play it too. Hmmm......
I am starting to wonder.

Well the client should be able to play it assuming all the codecs and property files are setup correctly on the client machine.

Like I said, the client SHOULD be able to play it (as evidenced by it playing on the same machine).

It sounds to me like you might have found a bug, and you should probably fill out a support request.

just an update, I use the elecard decoder and it fixed that playback problem. The elecard player is an evaluation copy so I'm not sure what happens when it expires, whether I can still use the decoder for SageTV. CPU usage is slightly higher than the nvidia decoder, but picture quality of the elecard decode is pretty good. But for someo reason, the nvidia decoder refuse to work in sagetv client now, very strange.
