Can someone tell me how to change the cluster size to 64K on an NTFS volume? I can not find anywhere to do it short of reformating a drive. Even then when you install XP it doesn't ask, it assumes a 4k cluster. How do you install and get it to format the drive for 64K? thanks. |

You may be able to with a 3rd party tool like Acronis Partition Expert (now part of Disk Director).
I know my version (Partition Expert 2003) will let you change cluster size on the fly, but not on NTFS. But you don't want to change a "normal" drive, 64k clusters are a huge waste if you have a bunch of small files (<64k). |

You can use Partition Magic to resize the clusters too w/o losing your data to a reformat.
stanger89: what do you mean by "on the fly" -- w/o requiring a reboot, reformat, or what? - Andy

I have been unable to get Partition Magic (8.0) to do this on an existing NTFS partition. It always ends with a 1681 error but no specifics. Followed all the Documentation and knowledge base articiles on the error, but have dead ended. It will not do it w/o providing a 1681 error message.
If someone knows another way...? |
