Question PVR350 Sage 2.2.2 Hardware Decoding Only

Hi Gang,

Enticed by some of the bullet points associated with the latest beta I went ahead and updated my pvr350 drivers to the latest revision (via shspvr's site) and installed the 2.2.2 beta.

I'm running on EPIA VIA m10k on XP 256MB

In the detailed setup I've got the (working from memory here, away from the PC PVR at the moment) PVR350 TV Out and UI Overlay enabled.

I want to enable the next option (again working from my fault recollection):

Hardware Decoding Only

(Which I assume means don't do any software decoding for playback, please correct me if I'm wrong in my understanding of what that option means, exactly)

If I enable the Hardware Decoding Only option and try to playback any video file or watch live tv, the application abruptly closes. Playback is fine with hardware decoding only disabled.

I do not recall if this was an issue for me with sage 2.0 or not.

Is this a known issue? User error =P ? any thoughts? Want a log file?

Thanks

rampy

I have a pvr 350 and am using the new beta with hardware only decoding enabled. Hasn't given me any issues so far. I think it just means it only displays the video on the tv out and doesnt display it on the computer screen as well. -Rob

I am currently testing the 2.2.2 beta and the 350. I have no problem using the Hardware Decoding only option. I have however just reported and problem when coming out of standby. I am still using the 1.22162 drivers. I have asked Fry what driver they are using when testing this feature .

Thanks for the feedback... hmph was hoping I wasn't alone with this one. I'm using 1.18.21.22266 driver.

I probably should have left well enough alone, but I always get sucked into the bleeding edge... =P

I'll poke around for logs and see if there's anything telling.

If anyone else as any ideas, i'd love to hear them.

update: well. I changed the setting to hardware encoding only to enabled, but then exited out of the interface intentionally (before going into media playback) and then restarted the sagetv service, and then restarted the sagetv client.

It seemed to work after that jiggle the handle approach. We'll see what happens over time, and after reboots etc...

*shrug*

I'm using a 350 as well with the beta 2.2.2 release on XP Pro. I have a pretty stable system now but there were 3 notable problems that I filed a bug report on. I was told to enable hardware decoding and see if that fixed the audio sync problems, but it didn't help.

First like another poster here I have had some audio sync issues. I've reformatted the drive I use for recordings with 64K cluster sizes and assigned an irq to the slot the PVR-350 card is in to insure it's not shared with anything else, and I added a temporary fan blowing on the card.

Second I also have an issue where it doesn't lock up, but the program gets so sluggish after I hit the end of a recorded show that it's not usable, oddly enough the cpu usage isn't high at that time. If you can manage to view or playback a show Sagetv comes back and is normal again. I don't like it but I can live with it.

Thirdly the 2.2.2 beta did cause a couple reboots for some reason, but after installing a cooling fan that seems better, and the audio sync seems to be better now. It'll take a couple days to be sure though. I'm getting near the end of the demo and I hope to know for sure by then so I can decide if I want to buy it, I wish the period was more like 30 days so you could solve problems more easily. So far I'm impressed with the beta and if the audio stays sync'd then I'm buying it.

The 2.1 version was not usable, it locked up if I sneezed, and by lockup I mean the entire computer locked up. I would not have considered Sage if 2.1 was all there was.

Against all beter judgement, negative reviews, and common sense....I have decided to go the way of hardware decoding! yes...that means pvr350, yay!

So I decided to read this forum until my eyes bled, and to the point that nothing made sense anymore and then went on a hardware hunt. My goal is to follow:

* buy a silent mini mid-tower (full ATX case)
* buy a mobo that has seemed to have less issues with PVR350
* This same mobo was to have *soundstorm* w/ spdif optical out (Nforce1-2)
* This board was to have a AGP slot (fallback plan!)
* succeed where most others have failed!

What I ended up with:

* CASE ANTEC|SLK1650B 350W (Seems like the Asus A7n266-VM is the only choice for a mini-ITX board/case, unless you can find the shuttle one listed in this forum somewhere..)

* ABIT AN7 - Nforce 2 w/ 6channel soundstorm spdif in/out
* AMD Sempron (1.8something gig) cant remember which one right now
* PVR350
* existing gf4 400mx for tv out (another svid output for config)

Thoughts on the hardware:

The case - noisier than I had hoped. I will probably go buy some insulation to see if i can quiet it down a little. But it is a great case to keep the cpu cool, due to its passive cooling air duct out the side! $60

The mobo - Is refurbished and sold at newegg for $52 right now. Like everything about it thus far.

AMD Sempron - Kinda sluggish, but what did I expect! Runs cool, and thats its job! $78

PVR350 - Who knows! $191 (who knows why its still so expensive)

Total: $432.11 w/ shipping

Results:

So far, not bad! Right now, after a few small speed bumps, I have a pretty stable system. I will not say that I am without issue until I get through the trials, but I must say that it looks as if I will be able to say so.

I have witnessed what would be the other pvr350 sufferrs *EOF* bug, but it did not create a soft or hard crash. It just basically caused a very long pause, which led me to switch to my software decoding display(gf4mx tvout) and cntrl-alt-del, within seconds of doing that, it caused sage client to relinquish enough resourses to then display the delete screen, so that i could choose cancel(or delete..whatever). I then immediately turned off the *promt for delete after end of recording* option, and have never witnessed the problem since.

Speed Bumps that I have yet to overcome:

To the reason why I have quoted this..... I suffer this same problem. If I leave software decoding enabled, all is well. As soon as I set hardware only, sage Client crashes. Tonight I will try the workaround below to see if that does the trick.

Thoughts:

I have yet to use the tv encoder portion of the pvr350. This is a client machine which already has access to other tv tuners. It might be prudent to avoid local encoding until all other stuff is tested *good*

*The TV out is very impressive quality!!!! *

Man the SPDIF passthrough is nice to have. Now I know what I was missing!

Anyone else dumb enough to take the plunge?

I.

It seemed to work after that jiggle the handle approach. We'll see what happens over time, and after reboots etc...

*shrug*

Thumbs up

That's cool insomnia... I hope it continues to be stable for you *knocks on wood*

Can you sum up what you posted here (or copy over) your on going experiences in this latest pvr350 stability thread

I'm going to have to have to look at this "Never ask to delete" option, where it is it?

As far as my issue that prompted this thread, I ended up going back to leaving hardware decoding only disabled... I find that SageTV doesn't remember my setting changes if I don't exit out of the frontend and then come back in (if it exits abruptly due to crash it seems to "forget" my last changes) but i digress.. I also reverted to sagetv 2.1 as I didn't find the 2.2 version helped with my particular issues.

FWIW, im running 2.2.7, latest 350 drivers (SHS's site), latest java 5.x, all updated drivers, intervideo software decoders, XP Sp2 w/ all updates and hotfixes. There are too many variables, so I just decided to run the latest on everything!

I.
