DVD & MPEG2 decoder audio

I was looking here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...spx#DVDDecoder for a DVD/MPEG2 decoder. I noticed in all of these that the only way to get 5.1 audio is to use an external decoder.

How come???

I'm just curious why you would need to select SPDIF to get the sound card to properly decode 5.1 ??

You can do full software decoding if you want, but generally you need to get a full DVD Player app like Cineplayer Surround or WinDVD/PowerDVD.
