5400 or 7200 rpm HD?

Good deal? Maxtor / 120GB / 5400 / 2MB / ATA-133 / EIDE Hard Drive, $50
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=THD-1200M

However, I'm worried about the low RPM...

Another option I'm looking at http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?id=923511 ia a Maxtor 60GB / 7200 / 2MB /ATA-100 / EIDE, $30

This drive has faster rotational speed, but slowed ATA-100...

What would you do? Just playing around to see if sage will work for me. This would be a first drive, I'd add more capacity later when I get hooked!

ps - I'm building from scratch - some say go for SATA? - $ and quiet, quiet drive performance are my key factors. Thanks!

Go for the 120GB drive as your first drive. Space is much more important then the speed of the drive. Actually, I go for QUIET, SPACE, SPEED, SATA in pretty much that order. Nothing to me is worse then having to have the volume up louder then needed because the computer is too loud. I've got a bunch of drives in my main computer which sits right in the living room in a fancy case and you don't even hear it, even with the TV and stereo turned off. <--The way it should be!

The drives can't even reach ATA 100 theoretical speeds though ATA 100 does allow for faster transfers than ATA 66 (different DMA mode).

Rotational speed affects access times. 7200 spins faster and typically means faster access. A PATA Seagate Baracudda IV is the quietest and fast. Samsung has quiet drives but they have muddied the market with variants of the same model (some louder than others.) If its a video server in a closet then I wouldn't worry about quiet drives (the quiet drives run hotter due to insulation.)

Personally, I'd stear clear of Tigerdirect. I'd go local, either the 'office' stores (if you like the rebate gig) or stick with newegg.com or similar. CompUSA is evil and if they were the only store(s) left I'd find a new hobby. Fry's is good if you don't mind the pin heads that work there.

Personally, I would consider looking at this 160GB Seagate drive for $50 after rebate. Quiet + 5 year warranty. They have other drives, but that is the one with the rebate currently. Check next week & there will probably be a different rebate.
