What the name of the new .4 alpha dscaler decoder?

you know the name I need to add to the additional video and audio decoders

it locks up when I put MPEG Video Decoder and MPEG Layer-3 Decoder and try to use them

Friendly name for Dscaler codec is "Mpeg2 Video Decoder". Full entry should look like this I believe: [videoframe/additional_video_filters=Mpeg2 Video Decoder,Video In,Video Out] (minus the brackets).

However, I just tried it myself an hour before seeing your post and it is not recognized for some reason. It does not show up in the Sage decoder list and a relook at Sage.Properties shows that my edit is intact. So let me know how you fare. Maybe a syntax problem or codec config issue. I was looking at the codec confguration options with GraphEdit.

It's "Dscaler Mpeg2 Video Decoder" and you don't need the In/Out pin names in 2.1 anymore

Also be aware than John (the developer) said there's a bug in .4 that won't allow it to connect to anything but ffdshow or VMR9.

The pin handles were as displayed by GraphEdit. Good to know that pin info is not required for listing additional codecs; that I was not aware of. That might explain why it may not be displaying; displaying and connecting being different things though.

A search in my registery explictly defined the friendly name as "Mpeg2 Video Decoder" but that was for alpha version 0.2. I was not aware the latest alpha release has had a change in "friendly name"; sorry about that.

I'm just behind the times I guess. Now that you mention it, I do recall some discussion asking John A. to change the name to something more specific than being quite so generic.

"Dscaler Audio Decoder"

As for not needing pin names, that was added in 2.1. And John, added Dscaler to the front of the decoder names in one of the earlier betas, sounds like about .3.

I updated to current DScaler alpha codec 0.4. Edited Sage.Properties to use freindly name "DScaler Mpeg2 Video Codec" and dropped the pin references per Stanger89's post that these are no longer needed in 2.1.

The codec now displays in the Sage list of available codecs. I selected the DScaler video codec and it does function. No evaluation of PQ; just a comment that it does seem to work.

The Sage.Properties line item now looks like this:
[videoframe/additional_video_filters=DScaler Mpeg2 Video Decoder] (minus the brackets).

As always, Sage must be completely closed and the service disabled when making the edit in order for the edit not to be overwritten. I have not tried the DScaler audio codec.

Hold the harvest.

After a reboot, I no longer got a picture from the DScaler codec. So, maybe not doable after all, or at least not solidly. The first go around was selecting the DScaler codec and cycling through "sleep" which was adequate for 2.0. I did not stop the Sage service which may be necessary for a codec change. Not sure of all the things that must be done now with the new Sage service in play.

Although, I was able to switch back to nVidia codec w/o stopping the Sage service, so not certain of anything. I can now definitivly say the DScaler codec may or may not work! I'll play around with it some more.

EDIT: I again selected the DScaler codec and completly quit Sage and stopped the Sage service. I then re-started the service and re-started Sage and the DScaler codec was functioning. Only for a reboot did it seem to fail but with no failed connection complaints. So, not a solid candidate it seems. It is alpha and John makes no misrepresentations about it.

EDIT EDIT: When using the DScaler codec (and in VMR9 by the way), it will not give picture for me after a reboot and Sage configured to startup to the tray. If I quit Sage and then restart Sage, the codec again works after a reboot. In conclusion, it appears it will work but at least with the limitation of the reboot problem. I have not tried it in overlay mode.

I'd be interested to hear of others findings, particulary PQ evaluation. I seem to recall from AVS discussions that the DScaler codec is not well suited for video based material at this point in time.

the audio decoder has excellent quality
but I have the damn vMR9 bug where frames get out of order and the picture stutters with every decoder but the NvVPP
so I have to use it

SageTV needs to address this issue

Dscaler Mpeg2 Video Decoder

are you sure this it is because I get black screen with it?

Yep, after stating what it was for version 0.2 (a mismatch to version 0.4) and then updating to 0.4, I can say with certainty that is the freindly name.

I have been using the codec for the last 24 hrs just to "see".

I guess you read my previous 2 posts on what I observed. I found "black screen" on reboots but can recover by completly exiting and restarting Sage. Sage says it's using the DScaler codec and I have been believing that but perhaps I should check under the hood and confirm which hamsters are running the wheel to be sure.

EDIT: Try using it in VMR9 mode. I have not tried overlay and do not know if it will work in that mode or not.

Seems to have promise but not ready for prime time but that is accepted and expected at this point. Hopefully John A. will continue with his efforts and find others knowledgable about MPEG decoders that can donate coding time to bring it to fruition.

We are long overdue for a high quality GNU MPEG2 decoder set.

.4 has a bug that won't let it connect to anything but ffdshow or VMR9. You should see if .5 is out, John mentioned it on AVS and that .5 would be out soon to fix it.
