Matt,

One thing I neglected to mention was that that log snippet happens again and again and again, every 9 seconds. It's still writing to the file as we speak.

It's absolutely killing me that I can playback a recorded show, but not live tv.

When you say they're normal resets, do mean the "normal" thing where MVP just re-boots for no reason?

Playing back a recorded show doesn't show any reset of the MVP.

I physically wrote a new file to the video directory on the server, from the MVP client machine. There permissions were fine to read the file, modify the file and delete the file.

Lastly, I tried one more test..... I told a third client to record a program, then immediately tried to watch the recording on MVP. It would not do it (just sat there with black screen and OSD). However, after I waited for a few minutes, it would play it OK.

Here's the latest log snippet (which is now 187K after only about 30 minutes):

Sounds kinda like my problem. If I watch a show that's still being recorded on my MVP, the time on the status bar will go too fast and eventually it will think I watched the entire show before it finishes recording it. This only happens if I start watching a show that is currently being recorded. Anything thats prerecorded works fine.

I seem to have trouble in waking up my desktop server.
I have no problems waking up my desktop server when I use my laptop to access shared drives in the desktp server.
But when I turn on the MVP, the desktop server still stays in standby...so I end up having to wake up the desktop server using my laptop and everything works ok.

Anyone know what the problem is?

FYI, I have set the "Wake Up Capabilities" of my NIC to "Magic Packet"
MVP->switch->router->NIC of pc.
Laptop->wireless access point->router->NIC of pc

Did you see my PM I sent you some days ago asking for more details about your system?

I have no experience with power management, but if with "turn on the MVP" means you are using the green button to wake up the MVP, then it looks like the MVP does not send out the "Magic Packet". If this is the case, you have to ask Hauppauge to fix their MVP device software.

You might have better success find answers over at SHS's site.

Thanks for your reply, Matt. I'll try SHS's site.

To clarify, I can turn on the MVP with no problem, but the MVP doesn't seem to be able to wake up my desktop pc (that is being used a server) from suspension.
It's something I can easily do when I use my laptop to access a shared drive in the desktop.

So I still have that MVP blue screen with "connecting to servers.." (or something similar) and no Sage menu.

Yeah, in that state, the MVP could probably do what you want, but it looks like it doesn't...

Exclamation New MVP Client V1.1 beta 6

The new MVP Client V1.1 beta 6 is now available on streams.ch.

The most notable changes are the addition of per-pixel transparency (no more dark screens when the OSD is active over video!) and support for the new 45 button remote control from Hauppauge.

See the Changelog for more details.

Enjoy!

Working GREAT.

Thank you for the changes. The per pixel transparency is VERY nice (even if it SLIGHTLY slows down the screen appearance/update time).

And from my testing, the reconnect handling works as expected now. By this I mean the show I was watching is actually marked as watched up through where I actually watched it. Nice.

The skipping seems to catch the button presses better. Obviously still a little slow, but not much you can do about that!

Oh, and the Hauppauge 45 button remote works fine.

This client keeps getting better. As reported above the per-pixel transparency is worth the very slight slowdown - the WAF is much improved.

The skip handling is also much better, considering the limitations of the MVP.

Thanks Matt! - keep up the good work.

Andy.

Just to answer this...

This question was answered on Hauppauge's European board. Short answer is that the MVP does *not* support waking remote computers (Wake On Lan). They did not indicate that they ever have intention of adding that feature, either.

Unless someone who is good at Linux and programming has the time and patience to start making us new dongle.bin files (like was done for the MythMVP project), I doubt you are going to see new functionality like this either.

Sorry.

Matt, The new video preview window is very much welcomed, thank you. You may be able to change its mode to give a full image in the same preview window-size though. I was looking through the MVPMC source-code, and in the libav source there's a source called av.c. This file has a function called 'av_move' which sets the size and position of the active video window. If you set the third param of the ioctl to '4' you get a full video image in an eighth-screen.

Here's the source for the function. The comments are useful.

/*
* av_move()
*
* Arguments:
* x - location of video on x axis
* y - location of video on y axis
* video_mode - specify a video mode from the following
* 0 - normal
* 1 - ??
* 2 - ??
* 3 - quarter screen
* 4 - eigth screen
* 5 - zoom
* 6 - ??
*/
int
av_move(int x, int y, int video_mode)
{
vid_pos_regs_t pos_d;

memset(&pos_d, 0, sizeof(pos_d));

pos_d.y = y;
pos_d.x = x;

ioctl(fd_video, AV_SET_VID_POSITION, &pos_d);

if (video_mode == 0)
ioctl(fd_video, AV_SET_VID_MODE, letterbox);
else
ioctl(fd_video, AV_SET_VID_MODE, video_mode);

if (video_mode == 0)
ioctl(fd_video, AV_SET_VID_SRC, 1);

return 0;
}

Hope this is of value.

Andy.

help with .avi playback

i installed 2.2.1 beta and now i'm having trouble with playback of .avi via MVP. They play fine through the client on a client PC. They play fine on the server both with WinAmp and SageClient.

When I play the .avi the timeline just goes rapidly through about 5min/sec and ends without playing audio or video.

The play imported video will paly SAGE recorded files though.

Thanks!

Hi Andy,

thanks for the info. Unfortunately, this is MVP-side code and since I use the Hauppauge dongle.bin to run on the MVP, I have no access to these functions.

Solution would be to write a dongle.bin from scratch, e.g. based on MVPMC. Any takers?

The MVP Client never played AVI files (that I know of ), even if they actually contain MPEG encoded video. Only MPEG1/2 PS and probably TS files (never tried TS files) are supported.

Matt, thanks for the quick reply... I could have sworn MVP played AVI (divx, etc) as long as the decoders were on the server. I know it worked with Hauppauge's app and I thought it worked with yours as well..

hmmm...

No problem -didn't realize you were using the original dongle.bin. I'm happy to do some digging around (as time permits) - are you able to send me any info about how you interact with the hauppauge dongle.bin? Maybe a pointer to a similar project that you used, or some source-code? You have my email address...

Andy.

Yeah, if anyone with Linux nd programming knowledge wants to dig through the MythTV MVPMC info to figure out how to make custom dongle.bin's, that would be helpful.

A custom dongle.bin could add almost anything that will fit in the tiny MediaMVP media space.

Although I'm a programmer, I am (near) Linux illiterate. SO I'm not much help there.

Anyway, it is working pretty well as-is. So any improvements here on out are just gravy.

Honestly, at this point I'm more interested in Hauppauge making an MVP2 with more output options (composite + SPDIF audio), more decoding options in hardware, etc. I can dream, anyway.

But I digress.

With all the Christmas shows on I just noticed...

With all the Christmas shows on I just noticed that the MVP doesn't do a very good job at all with the color Red. It always ends up being red w/ blue streaks through it, if not a totally different color completely.

Anyone else noticed this?

Just wondered whether the MVP could handle mpeg4's. Essentially it's this thread here that interests me:

Nope. Sorry. It could if Matt converted them to MPG on the fly (transcoding, like the hauppauge MVP software does). But that feature is not in the client, and even if it was would require a lot more CPU, etc.
