Archiving recoded programs to DVD

Hey everyone I’m trying to figure out a problem here and i was wandering if anyone else has encountered this issue or may make suggestions to help me out.

I’m using DVD-lab to try to compile recoded programs from sage into a DVD that I can play back at a later time... (cartoons for my son) the mpg files play great before i compile them to DVD format... they even play ok inside DVD-lab when I set up the chapters and such but when i compile the DVD and test it.. it plays back as if its playing in fast forward.

any suggestions would be wonderful!

Regards,

Thomas

DVD record rate?

Are the cartoons recorded dvd rate (3.25 GB an hour if I remember correctly)? If not and are recorded at a lower rate (2GB an hour for example), that might explain the speed if DVD-lab isn't changing them to 3.25 GB per hour. You could set Sage to record a show or two at the DVD rate (one of the choices in Sage) and put those recordings on a DVD and see if that helps.

Another solution might be a different DVD player. I have a Philips model that plays MPEG2 off a DVD-ROM (not DVD-Video) just fine at the 2GB per hour setting.

kdhamann,

Is your DVD player by chance the Philips DVP-642? This is the one that cost $70 or so and can playback DIVX/MPEG-4. I was thinking about buying this DVD player, but I haven't been able to figure out for sure if it will play MPEG-2 files. I know it play MPEG-4/Divx files but I haven't been able to confirm for sure whether it will play MPEG-2.

I have the Philips Q35. I did a little searching on the dvp-642 and found this review.

http://reviews.cnet.com/Philips_DVP6...VP642&part=rss

At least one person comments that it will play almost anything the person has tried including mpeg.

If a brick and mortar store is nearby that sells the dvp-642, it might be worthwhile to make a test cd and/or dvd and test the demo unit in the store.

I got the Q35 on clearance for $35, then later had made some dvdroms for the computer and decided to try it in the Q35 and they worked...

I hope that's of some help, although I have no direct experience with the dvp-642.

Thanks very much for your help and posting that review, kdhamann. Sorry for the long delay.

I just wanted to post back and say that I bought the DVP-642 and it does play raw MPEG-2 files. Unfortunately, it has some problems. It has trouble playing any files over 2GB. It seems to work fine as long as all of the files on a disk are under 2GB. Another problem is that it has trouble reading my DVD-R's. I have one other DVD player and 2 DVD drives and they have no trouble at all playing my DVD-R's. I wish I would have took your advice and bought it locally, but I bought it online. Anyway, I just wanted to come back and report on this in case anyone is considering buying this player. The second problem could be just a manufacturing problem, but the first one is a software problem so I don't think it could be fixed. I'm going to send it in to see what they can do.
