CPU usage

I seem now to be having trouble after letting 1.3.8 sleep overnight. It's taking my up 97-99% of my CPU according to Windows Task Manager. Even after ending the process and restarting SageTV, it's doing the same thing. My Athlon 2400+ is acting like a 386!!! When I ended the SageTV process, my computer returned to normal. When I restarted SageTV, it took over a minute fore it to read the DB. I'll try restartiing my computer and report back, but do you think this is related to 1.3.8 or the beta of Java 1.4.2? As I type this, SageTV just returned back to it's normal CPU usage...strange!

SageClient goes wacky on my system every couple of days. CPU utilization goes up near 100% and the video within the application locks up.

I think this kind of thing has happened to most users. I have never heard of a reliable fix.

have a look at your log files... I've had this and its usually when its error-ing like mad.. making 2gig txt files... somehow along the way i think it corrupts something.. deleting the logs and sometimes your other files is the only option... getting the logs of these cases back for Frey tech will be the only way we can hopefully let them see whats causing them...

My CPU Usage problem & Solution

When I was having a similar issue (CPU usage pegged at 100%, enormous log files), Jeff helped me diagnose the problem as a circular reference in the priorities of my "favorites" in the EPG.

I think it was something like this (I don't recall what the actual shows were)
1. Always record NYPD Blue instead of Frasier
2. Always record Just Shoot Me instead of NYPD Blue
3. Always record Frasier instead of Just Shoot Me

Not sure if this automatically causes the CPU usage problem, or if it only occurs when all three shows appear in the same time slot.

I solved the problem by going into the "Favorites" manager and deleting favorites until the CPU usage went back down, and then I started adding favorites back again.

This has happened to me twice now, so every few days I just check the task manager to make sure CPU usage isn't way up. If it is, I go mess with my favorites.

To me, this isn't a huge problem, since it doesn't affect the quality of the recordings, but it does 2 or 3 dropped frames per second during playback.

I'd be willing to bet that they're hard at work on some logic to identify those circular references!

Overall, I've found SageTV to be far and away the best PVR software available, and the support from Frey simply blew me away.

Good work, guys!

-Matt
