Screen Lag

When using S-Video as a source, why do I get about a full second of delay when changing channels?

But I only get about a tenth that delay when changing channels if I am hooked up directly to the cable. I know the card buffers, but why is S-Video such much slower than a cable connection. The buffering mechanism can't be that much different.

What are you using to change channels on your S-Video source?

I get something similar with the PV256. Even the software that came with the card is slow at starting and stopping MPEG streams.

It makes SageTV slow to change channel as there is a LOT of disc activity as it stops the current record and starts a new one. Do you know what it's actually accessing and if there is a way to cut it down? I've simply helped the problem by having a faster system disc! Would a huge lump of RAM help at all?

Xleon,

Please post your question about SageTV to the SageTV forum. Channel changing in the 2 applications is different. I don't want to confuse anyone.

Narflex,

In this case, I have a TiVo unit that has S-Video out into my S-Video in on my Hauppauge card. From when I press a button on the TiVo remote, it takes at least a full second before that change is reflected on the SageRecorder window. If I plug the S-Video out of the TiVo directly into the TV, the change is immediate with zero discernible lag. If I plug my cable directly into my Hauppauge card (instead of the TiVo) and use the SageRecorder application to change channels, there is a sight delay, but it is an order of magnitude smaller. I would expect that if the delay was due to MPEG-2 processing and/or buffering video to disk, that the delay would be similar regardless of input source.

Just FYI, I'm not quite sure where the lag is coming from in either circumstance, but I know there must be a technical way around it because TiVo units don't experience it, and they are doing exactly the same thing. (MPEG-2 processing and buffering to disk). If we can identify where the delay comes from and eliminate it, I think that will be a big win for your product.
