Thanks to everyone for the comments and speculation - I guess I'll try a netstat to really see what's going on (as Neilm suggested). Although, I'm less inclined to mess with things when my SageTV is behaving itself.

I don't blame you... This thread is so far off the rails that it is onto the next track! The problem is that most of us didnt realise you were using the EPG plugin until it was too late!

Just to clarify, I'm using the SageTV Zap2It Data Direct plugin to get my listings. I assumed it connected directly to Zap2It to retrieve the listings and my PC processed the data.
It does.

Does the plugin connect to the SageTV server or is that error I received in my original post ("could not connect to the SageTV Server") inaccurate?
The error is inaccurate -- its just a single error message that is the same for whether you use the built-in EPG data for the US (which comes from Frey's servers), the Zap2it plugin for Canada (which comes from Zap2It's servers), or the XMLTV plugin for the rest of the world (which comes from a local XML file).
It should also only appear when you are setting up a new source -- when it needs to find out immediately what lineups exist for your zip.

I'm just wondering what the root cause really could be.
Possibly a temporary network glitch at your ISP or Zap2It -- I occaisionally see similar messages on the XMLTV forums about the ZAP2It XMLTV grabber...

By the way -- you know that you can force an EPG update by going into setup/channel setup, and disabling and re-enabling a channel... You don't have to reconfigure your source!
