Unscheduled recording of programs

I will look at "View Upcoming Recording Schedule" and see a couple of shows scheduled for much later in the day. Then a few minutes later I will see that Sage is recording some random show that wasn't displayed on the "View Upcoming" schedule.

I never use Sage to watch live TV, so I know it is not that it is in that mode. Plus, the recordings are on different channels that I rarely watch.

And, it may be my imagination, but I never noticed this until I installed the Nielm STV. Or maybe I never noticed until I saw Nielm's "Currently Recording" task bar...

Any suggestions?

Have you enabled the Intelligent Recording feature in Detailed Setup -> General?

Edit: Also, while on the Recording Schedule screen, use the Options command to see ap pop-up menu of options. Is the Display Filter set to All, so that you see all types of upcoming recordings?

Thanks for the response.

Yes, the display is set to "all" and Intelligent Recording is enabled.

In case it wasn't clear, then: Intelligent Recording is what is causing those recordings you did not schedule.

For more info, see the link to the glossary entry for that item here: What is SageTV?

I fully understand the concept of IR, but this seems to be different than previous activity because:

a.) even previous IR selected recordings appeared in "View Upcoming". These recordings just seem to start without any advance notice.

b.) all the shows will all be on the same channel, even if the shows are unrelated. For example, today Sage recorded about three straight hours from Outdoor Life Network. Fishing, bicycle racing, and outdoor clothing. I never watch OLN.

I'm used to random stuff appearing in "View Upcoming"

Oh, then I guess it isn't IR.

Do the recordings show up in the SageTV Recordings list?

Since you said you never noticed these recordings before, are you _sure_ it is recording & not a glitch in the STV? Go to Setup -> System Information. Does the info list anything currently recording when the main menu says it is?

Have you ever set some property to have the tuner always record?

System Information does display the show being recorded.

I didn't know there was a property like that. So if there is, I haven't set it.

Yes, the shows show up and can be watched.

Thanks for trying to help. I'm going to turn off aggressive profiling to see if that has any impact.

What happens when you put it to sleep & wake it up... is the show still recording?

It will keep recording. Same thing if I restart Sage.

If I have an actual recording scheduled, it will record properly and then flip to another channel after the recording is done.

It is like it always has to have something to record.

Do you use the preview windowor background video playback on menus?

Use the Options command on the main menu (Ctrl+o or right click) OR go to Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Multimedia tab -> Video Menu Options.

Is "Display Video on Menus" set to "Always"? Set it to "If Active" or "Never".

Edit: but that doesn't seem like it would switch to another channel to keep recording. (?)

Oh -- and it was this property that I was wondering whether it had gotten set to true:

mmc/encoders/###/never_stop_encoding=false

Where ### is some number.

Thanks, the IR was the problem with the crazy recording I was experiencing also (at least, I believe it was ... will need to wait a little to know for sure). Thanks.
