recovering programs deleted by sage

well, i'm very upset right now because i removed my favorite "xviii summer olympics" which subsequently deleted about 100gb of olympics that i had yet to watch. i hate that "feature" and really don't understand why sage has to work that way.

i thought i would have a pretty good chance of recovering the files since i realized what i had done almost immediately when i noticed all the available space on my hard drives, so i shut down sage right away to prevent it recording any more programs which might overwrite the old files. but when i tried running a file recovery program (the one i tried was called recover my files) it couldn't find the files. does sage do anything special when it deletes files that makes them unrecoverable?

has anyone else tried recovering sage files, or have any other suggestions?

From an old post around here where I got this info: check out Handy Recovery. There is a free & a commercial verison.

Then, to prevent files from being auto-deleted like that in the future, set the following property while SageTV is completely closed:

seeker/clear_partials_and_unwanted_when_ir_off=false

A little background, FYI (although I understand your frustration).

Back in the day, Sage never deleted anything until it needed room. Sufice to say, many complained greatly about that. FFW to Sage 2, in response the behavior was changed so that if IR is disabled, and something is not a Favorite or Manual recording it is deleted immediately. It's an unfortunate side effect that by removing a favorite, anything recorded under it is no longer a Favorite or Manual, and is therefore summarily deleted.

Audio problem returned after making change.

An observation; not sure if the two problems related, but...
My system has been running fine for a little over two weeks after making a change to the "never_stop_encoding" line in the properties file to fix an audio problem I was having with one of my tuner cards.
When I made the "seeker/clear_partials_and_unwanted_when_ir_off=false" change (I was thinking a missing file error may have been caused by an auto delete issue, where I did a manual record for the Olympics) the problem came back (within 12 hours)where I lost audio on one particular card. I've since changed it back to "true" and am monitoring to see if the audio problem doesn't come back.
I've been keeping a log (installs/uninstalls, changes, etc.) of even the smallest changes to my setup and Sage so I can try and pinpoint some of the problems I've been encountering. So just wanted to throw this out there.

I found two file recovery programs. Restoration and PCI File Recovery. I found PCIFR easier to use because you can select multiple files at once. But one time I restarted it and it crashed so I had to use Restoration. Both require you to restore the file to another drive. Luckily I had just installed another 250GB drive and had another drive to restore to.

Does anyone know why it can't just restore the entry in the filesystem since all the data is still there?
