What is the best way to move files to other folders.
I need to move alot of my Sage recordings to other folders that are part of my video library. Just moving to the library leaves them in the same location. If I move them outside of Sage the files do not keep all the information.
What I would like to do is move them into a different folder and maintain all the information. I don't care if they are in the Sage library or the imported video library. Anyone have any ideas ??? Thanks in advance. |

What I do is to copy the file to the new location. I then replace the original file with a short dummy file. The purpose of the dummy file is just to keep the EPG data available. To view the file you can copy it back to the original file or make the new location an imported video library.

Make sure you back up your wiz.bin etc. first.
This is from Opus4's recent addition to the FAQ: Q: Can I move a SageTV Recording file and still have it listed with all its data on the SageTV Recordings screen? A: Yes, but only if you move it to another Video Directory. CAUTION: To prevent any problems while moving a recording, only move the file after exiting SageTV. Do not leave it sleeping, close it completely. All you have to do is exit SageTV, move your chosen file(s) to another directory that has been listed in Detailed Setup as a Video Directory, then restart SageTV. As long as a recording file has not been modified, it will still be recognized as a valid recording by SageTV when it starts, and its location data will be updated accordingly. NOTE: The original drive must still be visible to SageTV after moving the files. (Not the video directory; just the drive.) If it has been removed, SageTV will not acknowledge that the files have been moved. It won't delete the files from their new location, but it also won't recognize where they are. Thanks Tom.
I read that also but the problem is it has to be another video folder.. I don't want to specify my library folders as recording folders as that will destroy the integrity of my folder system, as Sage picks the folder to record in. The reason I need this is I have a Pinnacle Showcenter set up in my wife's hobby room and she uses that to watch her saved craft shows. So I need to have recordings in specified folders. |

I think he said his name is Dave recently.
Have you tried exiting SageTV, moving a file to an imported video library folder & then restarting SageTV? I have not done that, so I don't know if it will keep the recording data. If you try it, let us know the results. Edit: Unless you meant that is what you tried already... - Andy

I'm not sure how well it would work as Sage could eventually delete the file but you could try setting the size that Sage is allowed to use for the folder to just above what you actually have in there then Sage wouldn't record to that folder because it would think there wasn't enough space left.

Strange the way we see what we want to see... I could have sworn his handle was TomMox... You made me look twice Andy.. Sorry Dave for calling you Tom. I moved some stuff tonight so I'll check out your idea Andy.
Dave (If that's your name) I don't want to keep that close an eye on my recording folder, but I'm sure it would work.... |

Here's your answer, trevorst: Download and install Malore's skin (STV) from here - http://homepages.isunet.net/smichael/sagetv/
He has done some work to allow show information to be permanently exported to XML (if you need it) and I beleve sometime in June he added the ability for SageTV to recognize shows and populate all the guide information after a user manually moves the files from one location to another. I have done this myself and it works great. I actually LEAVE SageTV running and move (or copy, then delete origs) files to another drive or to my DVD-writer. The cool part is that I can put any DVD with archived mpg shows in my DVD drive and SageTV will find the shows, populate the information, and I can play the files from my DVD upstairs to my living room TV downstairs. SageTV has always performed great at removing shows I manually delete, then quickly recognizing the files on the DVD I recently inserted. NOTE: I have my DVD drive set up as a "Library" directory, shared across the network. Sometimes I have to tell SageTV to "Refresh Media Library" (an option in Malore's STV. May not be in the original skin). P.S. I love Malore's STV. It's got some GREAT features. Thanks Malore!

I tried your idea Spacefuzz and it appeared to work at first but then I started getting a file not found on all the files I had moved.
