graphics cards

So I'm looking to piece together a SageTV box, and I'm just trying to figure out what to buy.

I was originally thinking about getting a 350 and a 250, and using the tv out on the 350, but looking through the forums there seem to be some issues with the tv out on the 350.

So now I'm thinking more about getting the multi-tuner bundle with 2 250's in it, and getting a video card with a tv-out port on it.

Problem is, the only thing the system requirements page lists is "needs video overlay capability" and "most recent cards should support this". That's no help at all!!

Anyway, I don't want to break the bank on this and I already have a high-end gaming rig, so I'd really rather not buy a big giant fast 3d card if I don't need it (which I suspect I do not).

What are you guys running? What do you suggest I get for a graphics card in this thing?

thanks

I'd recommend a graphics card over a 350 (stability, features). The 350 is probably going to give you slightly better image quality, but if you have an SDTV then I personally don't think it much matters. If you have an HDTV then a 350 is pointless.

I have an Asus v9520 (Nvidia FX5200) 64MB that I use on my Sage server (which feeds an SDTV via composite cable). It's fine. Cost me $55 from NewEgg.

NewEgg doesn't seem to carry the 64MB card any more, but the 128MB card is going for $71.50

EDIT: actually, it would be very difficult to accidentally purchase a new retail card video card today that does not support overlay.

I would look at a 9600/5200/5700
only get the PRO/Ultra if you want it

I'm also putting together a client box and was wonding what your recommendations are if I plan to use VMR9. I'm using a 9200 on my server at the moment the VMR9 shows interlacing errors on fast motion which is unacceptable (this is with sonic decoders). I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on a card for my client that would alleviate this or is this more of a symptom of the decoder pack. This is on an SDTV by the way.

picture quality of VMR9 with nvDVD looks fine coming out of a FX 5200 to a SDTV here

only time you need a faster card is for VMR9 on a HDTV

my thoughts are 9800 PRO
