.MPG file question

Hi All:
I just put together my first PVR using using SageTV, I am very happy with it . Now I am in what more can I do phase. I want to be able to view the .mpg files recorded by SageTV on a second compute, to be able to burn CDs DVDs or edit. but when I try and view the files I get errors that the program doesn'r reconize the format. After reading many posts, I am thinking I need to install a mpeg-2 Codec. I have tried a couple free ones and none seem to work (same error) I also found mentioned in several posts the use of Sonic CinePlayer DVD Decoder Pack. Is this what I will need to view these file or am I missing some completly?

Otherwise if you have an DVD software (most video cards come with something) just install that.
