The Best DirecTV Receiver

Does anyone have a suggestion on what is the best DirecTV receiver to use that Sage can control through the low speed data jack? Doesn't really matter what model to me.

I have a Sat-B3 using the serial port ofr control and no issue there. I have an A3 but since I can't use the optical audio the B3 is just fine.

Has anyone had any luck controlling the Zenith SAT 520 via serial connection?? I understand it is similar to the Sony SAT HD300 in that both are using the same LG electronics.

Thanks...

Datalux, I don't think the 520 uses a standard serial interface. It cannot be controlled by a Tivo, and I'm pretty sure it cannot be controlled by Sage. I have a 520 that I will probably be selling because it is no use to me after switching to Sage. I had to switch to my old RCA DRD420RE to have serial control, it works great. If you figure out a way to get the 520 working please let me know!

I have tried it with Tivo and SageTV. When I couldn't get it working I did some searching and found that the commands are totally different than other receivers, or something to that effect.

For receivers with a standard serial interface that supports serial commands it should work fine.

So how about this setup. A Sony SAT-B3 with a serial to USB cable and of course running SageTV. Would that natively work?

The B3 will work, not sure about the USB-serial cable. In Sage you have to tell it which com port to use to communicate with the receiver, so if you can use a usb port as a serial port then it should work. To be safe I would just use a cheap DB9-DB9 cable with the Sony Sat-B3.

Hmm...just means now I need a card with a serial port since my system doesn't have one.

I did install a USB-serial and once I installed a drive for the cable it works on a COM port. Pretty nice
