Wiped out

well I re-learned that avluable lesson this moring , BACKUP-BACKUP-BACKUP. It seems I had a momentary power failure last night and to my suprise it wiped out the Properties file, and the Wiz.bin and Wiz Bak files.

The reson I say this is that when I restarted Sage it took some type on rebuilding data base and the first sreeen showed the adding capture devices. That's when I checked the properties file and it was empty expect for a lot of filler /u0000 etc.

SO my question is I will now keep a back up of the Properties, Wiz.in and Wiz.bak files, however do these files need to be restored before I first boot Sake for the first time or can they be added at any time? Also I would not have thought the three critial files would ahve been blown away. Is that normal or unusual. Perhaps its also time for battery backup.

If you want to restore backup copies of those files, do so while SageTV is not running. And, yes, battery backup isn't a bad idea.

Each time you start SageTV it backsup the two critical files, sage.properties and wiz.bin. But if you start up SageTV when either of these files are corrupted, more than likely it will overwrite the good backups with copies of the corrupted file. I periodically make copies of these files. You can replace them anytime that SageTV isn't running. I've replaced my sage.properties file a couple times, but so far haven't had the wiz.bin file corrupted. Wiz.bin contains the show data and favorites settings, so you lose a lot more when that goes bad.

This reminded me of another utility to add to the list. See: New version of cyclic backup of Sage config files.
