Programming Guide

As I continue to plan out my new HTPC I was wondering what the approximate size of the daily download of the programmming guide is?

Where are you located? If you are using the built-in EPG, instead of XMLTV, I'm not sure anyone knows the answer to that. What kind of internet connection do you have? If it is always on, you can simply schedule it to occur in the middle of the night if you want. There is also an "autodial if needed" option you can use too, though I never used it.

It's most likely dependent on the number of channels you have marked to receive, so the most accurate answer would be to use a network traffic monitor (I like NetPerSec) and see how much it takes. I think in the SageTV FAQ found in these forums is info on forcing an update, but I don't know how a forced connection would compare to a normal daily conneciton.

I'm in Pennsylvania and I have digital cable and a majority of the channels that go with it. The main reason I'm asking is because I have a relatively slow dial-up connection and one phone line, so I would need it to dial-up in the middle of the night and download it , much like the digital cable boxes used to.

Yes, you can schedule it for the middle of the night -- for details, see this FAQ entry.

Someone else will have to comment if there are any special notes regarding using the autodial setting.
