Farewell

After 13 plus years I have finally turned off SageTV.

I'm swapping

SageTV on windows PC with a quad tuner card + two HD300s

for

Emby with DVR on QNAP NAS with HDHomeRun quattro + two Roku 3s.

There's still glitches and its way less powerful and nowhere near as all encompassing as SageTV but gives me access to both UK TV catchup sources and OTA TV from one small box and one menu system with multi room capability. Most importantly without shelling out a big monthly subscription for Sky/Virgin/BT.

SageTV has been awesome and in particular this forum has been just amazing for community support and great plugins. One of SageTVs biggest assets I feel.

So thank you all and farewell

Michael

So long and thanks for all the fish!

Seriously - thanks for the interesting plugins that you wrote through the years.

Emby doesn't do Streaming, only OTA.

The biggest problem I have with Emby is the lack of Closed Captioning support. Otherwise, it can act as an alternative to SageTV. However, Tablo is a better choice, albeit still not up to SageTV performance.

Thank you for the Web Feed Encoder, Michael. I used that numerous times through my SageTV server life. Don't be afraid to stop in once in a while anyways.

Does the encoder still work?

I do not know. I haven't attempted to install/use it since upgrading to version 9.

You are, indeed, correct. Closed Captioning works as expected on Android devices (at least, Shield and Fire TV Cube). The problem is with ROKU which is my main streaming device. I rarely use Shield or Fire devices. I may have to revisit that policy. <chuckle>

I will try the DVR option tonight and see how that works.

Seems like a lot of APPS have problems with Roku ... HDHomeRun APP ... Channels ... list goes on. I have a Roku but only use it for XFINITY Beta .. EMBY DVR is ok just too simple ... no way to Record by Category Actors keyword etc .. Main reason I still have Sage running and use Channels DVR as my main DVR.

Yeah, I sorta got stuck in a rut... or maybe I am just lazy. <chuckle> I can blame ATT TV NOW (formerly DirecTV NOW) which was/is my source of non-OTA programming.

I had forgot about Channels DVR. This exercise reminded my of how useful it is. Particularly the TV Anywhere function. The EPG on the same page for both OTA and Streaming is quite handy. (https://getchannels.com/tv-everywhere/)

In my household everybody watches different shows in Prime time ... I just simply set in Channels DVR to record all new shows on the main broadcast channels during prime time set it and forget it. Channels DVR also has excellent remote viewing. EMBY does not allow this.
